The AVR-5803 is compatible with Dolby Pro Logic IIx and HDCD playback.
As such, a number of functions have been added, as described below.
Also refer to the AVR-5803’s operating instructions.

Feature
2 Dolby Pro Logic II x compatibility
Dolby Pro Logic II x furthers the matrix decoding technology of Dolby Pro Logic II to decode audio signals recorded on two chan-
nels into up to 7.1 playback channels, including the surround back channel. Dolby Pro Logic II x also allows 5.1-channel sources
to be played in up to 7.1 channels.
The mode can be selected according to the source. The Music mode is best suited for playing music, the Cinema mode for
playing movies, and the Game mode for playing games. The Game mode can only be used with 2-channel audio sources.
2 Dolby Pro Logic II Game mode compatibility
In addition to the previously offered Music and Cinema modes, the AVR-5803 also offers a Game mode optimum for games.
2 HDCD

(High Definition Compatible Digital
®
) decoder
HDCD is an encoding/decoding technology that greatly reduces the distortion that occurs upon digital recording while main-
taining compatibility with the conventional CD format, thus expanding the dynamic range and achieving a high resolution.
Conventional CDs and HDCD compatible CDs are identified automatically to select the optimum digital processing.

Selecting the surround mode
(1) For 2-channel sources
Press the DOLBY SURROUND button to set the Dolby Surround mode.
The PLIIx mode is set when the “SB CH OUT” surround parameter is set to “ON”, and the
PLII mode is set when this parameter is set to “OFF”.
Select the desired mode from among the “MODE” parameters under the surround para-
meters.
The decoder switches as described below.
When the “SB CH OUT” parameter is set to “ON”
When the “SB CH OUT” parameter is set to “OFF”
1 To play in the PLIIx mode, set “Sp.Back” at the system setup to “1Spkr” or “2Spkr”.
