Safe ty in struc tions for use
To minimize the risk of fi re withi n the inner bowl, the followin g should be observed:
• Items tha t have been spotted or soaked with vegetable or c ooking oil constitute a fi re hazard and should not be
placed in a tumble dryer.
Oil-affected items ca n ignite spontaneously, especially when exposed to heat s ources Such as in a tumble dryer.
The items become warm, causin g an oxidation reaction in the oil. Oxidation creates he at. If the heat cannot
escape, the items can beco me hot enough to catch fi re. Piling, stack ing or storing oil-affected items can prevent
heat from escaping and so cre ate a fi re hazard.
If it is unavoidable that fabric s that contain vegetable or cooking oil or have been c ontaminated by hair care prod-
ucts be placed in a tumble dr yer they should fi rst be washed in ho t water with extra detergent-this will reduce,
but not eliminate, the hazard. Th e ‘cool down’ cycle of tumble dryers should be used to reduce t he temperature
of the items. They should not be remo ved from the tumble dryer or piled or stacked while hot .
• Items tha t have been previously cleaned in, washed in, soaked in or spot ted with petrol/gasoline, dry-cleaning
solvents or other fl ammable or explosive su bstances should not be placed in a tumble dryer.
Highly fl ammable substances commonly u sed in domestic environments include acetone, denature d alcohol,
petrol/gasoline, kerosen e, spot removers (some brands), turpentine, waxes and wa x removers.
• Items co ntaining foam rubber (also known as latex foam) or similarly te stured rubber like materials should not be
dried in a tumble dryer on a heat se tting.
Foam rubber materials ca n, when heated, produce fi re by spont aneous combustion.
• Fabric s ofteners or similar products should not be used d uring a drying cycle, to eliminate the effects of st atic
electricity unles s this practice is specifi cally recommended by the manufact urer of the fabric softener or product.
• Underg arments that contain metal reinforcements sh ould not be placed in a tumble dryer.
Damage to the tumble dryer ca n result if metal reinforcements come loose during d rying.
When available a drying rac k could be used for such items.
• Plastic articles su ch as shower caps or babies waterproof napkin cove rs should not be placed in a tumble dryer.
• Rubber-backed ar ticles, clothes fi t ted with foam rubber pads, pillows, rubber boot s and rubber-coated tennis
shoes should not be placed in a tumble d ryer.
