4.5 Buffer mode
In Buffer mode, the BAT 490 maintains the batter y
charge if electrical equipment has to be powered with
the engine stopped. The output voltage of the BAT 490
is a smooth DC voltage and is therefore suitable for
supplying the vehicle electrical system with the vehicle
battery.
i The charger only establishes supply to the charging
clips once correct battery voltage polarity has been
detected.
1. Switch on the BAT 490 by way of the on/off switch
(Fig. 2, Pos. 1).
? The red LED (Fig. 1, Pos. 3) lights.
2. Connect the red charging clip to the positi-
ve post (+).
3. Connect the black charging clip to the negati-
ve post (–).
4. Press .
? The battery voltage is displayed for three seconds
and the "Modes" menu then appears.
5. Select "Buffer mode" with
or .
6. Press .
? The yellow LED lights (Fig. 1, Pos. 5).
? The battery is buffered.

! In this mode, voltage is still present at the charging
clips even after the charging clips are disconnected.
i The parameter settings are configured in the "Para-
meters" menu (refer to Section 5.1).

8. Switch off the BAT 490 on completion of Buffer mode.
9. Remove the charging clips from the battery.
4.6 Backup mode
In backup mode, the BAT 490 can power the electrical
equipment in a vehicle in place of a battery. Backup
mode can be used for example to maintain a supply of
power to the electrical equipment in a vehicle when
changing a battery. The output voltage of the BAT 490
is a smooth DC voltage and is therefore suitable for
backup of the vehicle electrical system even without
a vehicle battery.
i The charger only establishes supply to the charging
clips once correct battery voltage polarity has been
detected.
1. Switch on the BAT 490 by way of the on/off switch
(Fig. 2, Pos. 1).
? The red LED (Fig. 1, Pos. 3) lights.
2. Connect the red charging clip to the positi-

3. Connect the black charging clip to the negati-

? Backup is provided for the vehicle power supply.
The vehicle battery can be replaced.
