The Carrier Infinity 96, Model 58MVP, is a deluxe 4-way multipoise, direct-vent, variable-speed, condensing gas furnace designed to provide optimal heating comfort and efficiency for residential applications. This furnace incorporates ComfortHeat™ technology and Ideal Humidity™ to deliver a superior indoor environment.
The primary function of the Carrier Infinity 96 is to provide heating for homes, achieving industry-leading ultra-high efficiency with an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) of up to 96.6 percent. Its variable-speed design contributes to efficient performance. The ComfortHeat technology automatically adjusts the heating level, maximizing the use of low heating levels to produce near-silent furnace operation while precisely meeting heating needs. This ensures the indoor temperature remains within 1 degree of the thermostat setpoint. The furnace operates in low heat most of the time, consuming up to 80% less power compared to single-capacity furnaces.
The Infinity 96 features a sealed combustion system that draws combustion air from outdoors and safely vents flue gases outside the home. This sealed design minimizes operational noise, reduces cold drafts, and limits air infiltration. The furnace can be installed in upflow, downflow, or horizontal positions, accommodating up to 24 different applications. Its versatile 4-way multipoise design, combined with variable speed, makes it suitable for use with split-system cooling, including 2-speed units. When matched with the Infinity Control and a Carrier air conditioner or heat pump, it forms a fully communicating system, requiring only four thermostat wires between components. This system provides unparalleled control over temperature, humidity, indoor air quality, and zoning, along with on-screen, text-based service reminders and equipment malfunction alerts. Troubleshooting can even be performed from the outdoor unit without needing to enter the home. Optional remote access via telephone or Internet is available with a remote connectivity kit.
The ComfortHeat feature ensures that on the coldest days, the furnace provides full heating capacity, while on moderate days, it regulates itself to a lower capacity, offering a comfortable home and minimizing operating costs. A patented algorithm adjusts the low-heat operating time to match indoor conditions. The Ideal Humidity system actively controls both temperature and humidity, providing the right amount of humidity day and night, even in mild weather, which saves energy by allowing the thermostat to be set higher in cooling mode, potentially reducing cooling costs by up to 20%.
The furnace includes a media filter cabinet as a standard accessory, which facilitates the easy addition of a Carrier high-efficiency air filter to enhance indoor air quality. The insulated blower compartment reduces air and motor noise, contributing to quiet operation. The unit is designed for use with natural and propane gases, with a CSA (AGA and CGA) listed gas conversion kit required for propane use. The combustion-air and vent pipes can terminate through a side wall or the roof using a factory-authorized vent termination kit. A blower access panel switch automatically shuts off 115-V power to the furnace when the panel is opened, ensuring safety.
The Comfort Heat Control Center, a microprocessor-based system, provides state-of-the-art combustion, temperature, and airflow control for maximum comfort and peak efficiency. It maintains a consistent air-to-fuel ratio regardless of vent sizing and conditions by monitoring inducer motor RPM and pressure switch readings. The first cycle after a power reset provides 16 minutes of low heat before switching to high heat, unless the thermostat is satisfied. Subsequent cycles offer 0 to 16 minutes of low heat, depending on the length of the previous thermostat cycle. Airflow control is achieved by measuring the static load on the air delivery system during each heating cycle, allowing the microprocessor to deliver correct airflow despite variations in system restrictions, such as dirty filters or zone damper changes. A special dehumidification function, with direct input from a thermidistat or humidistat, adjusts system airflow for greater humidity removal and increased cooling comfort during summer months. The Monoport burners are finely tuned for smooth, quiet combustion and economical operation. The factory-installed bottom closure is easily removable for side or bottom return applications. ComfortFan™ allows users to select continuous fan speed at the thermostat for year-round comfort, and SmartEvap™ can reduce summertime humidity levels by nearly 10% compared to standard systems.
The primary heat exchanger is made of aluminized steel for corrosion resistance, contributing to reliability. The patented Serpentuff™ condensing heat exchanger cells are laminated with polypropylene for enhanced corrosion resistance and externally epoxy-coated to prevent oxidation, extending the furnace's lifespan. The heat exchanger is positioned to extract additional heat. The furnace includes a burner sight glass for viewing the burner flame, and a burner assembly with energy-saving, inshot burners and a hot surface ignitor for safe, dependable heating. Pressure switches ensure adequate flow of flue products through the furnace and out the vent system. An inducer motor pulls hot flue gases through the heat exchangers, maintaining negative pressure for added safety. A condensate drain connection collects moisture condensed during the combustion process. A heavy-duty blower circulates air across the heat exchangers to transfer heat into the home. An air filter and retainer are included, which can be used for side return applications. A rollout switch (manual reset) prevents overtemperature. A 3-amp fuse provides electrical and component protection. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on the control center serve as code lights for diagnosing furnace operation and service requirements. A 24-V transformer behind the control center provides low-voltage power to the furnace control center and thermostat.
