CHAPTER 2
Configuring the XMPP Server
The Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) is an open, XML-based standard for near real-time
communication. Because XMPP provides near real-time communication among different platforms for
information distribution, it is the primary communications and transport protocol used between NPS
components.
Jabber is the implementation of XMPP that is installed with the NPS software. The configuration of Jabber
is described in this module.

Configuring the XMPP Server
Jabber is used to facilitate communication between PE routers for the purposes of service resolution. Use this
task to configure the Jabber server on one of the PE routers in your system. It is also used by the capability
directory (CD) to get device capabilities through the XMPP pubsub protocol. Generally, the Jabber server is
installed on the DCE-facing PE where the service resolution engine (SRE) is installed.
