Overview

This document is an operator's manual for a Craftsman 12 AMP Electric Blower/Vacuum, Model No. 358.798370. It provides detailed instructions for safe operation, assembly, and maintenance of the device.

The Craftsman Electric Blower/Vacuum is a versatile household appliance designed for both blowing and vacuuming tasks. As a blower, it is capable of moving air at 200 MPH (miles per hour) and generating 410 CFM (cubic feet per minute), making it effective for sweeping debris, grass clippings, straw, or leaves from driveways, sidewalks, patios, and other surfaces. It can also be used to gather these materials into piles or remove them from corners, joints, or between bricks. When configured as a vacuum, the unit is designed to pick up dry materials such as leaves, grass, small twigs, and bits of paper, collecting them in an attached bag.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Motor: 12 AMP
  • Blower Speed: 200 MPH
  • Blower Volume: 410 CFM
  • Power Supply: 120 A.C. voltage supply (as shown on the nameplate)
  • Insulation: Double Insulated (to protect against electric shock)

Usage Features:

The unit features an ON/OFF SWITCH to activate the motor, with two run positions: Low and High. The NOZZLE is designed to direct the flow of air, and the INLET COVER LATCH is used to open and close the inlet cover.

Assembly for Blower Use:

To use the unit as a blower, the blower tube is inserted into the blower outlet and twisted clockwise until firmly seated. The nozzle is then twisted into the end of the blower tube, pointing upward. An inlet restrictor, which improves blower function, should be installed and the inlet cover latched closed.

Assembly for Vacuum Use:

Converting the unit to a vacuum involves several steps. First, the blower tube and nozzle must be removed. The inlet restrictor, used for blower operation, must be removed by opening the inlet cover (using a screwdriver to pry open the latch) and rotating the restrictor counter-clockwise. Two vacuum tubes (an upper and a lower) are then attached. The upper vacuum tube is inserted into the vacuum inlet area, aligning arrows on both parts and twisting clockwise until seated. The lower vacuum tube is then attached to the upper tube, aligning arrows and pressing them together until fully seated (approximately 3 inches). Finally, the collection bag is attached by sliding its opening over the blower outlet and securing it with a velcro strap through the buckle. The zipper on the bag must be completely closed.

Operating as a Blower:

  • Always inspect the area before use, removing debris and hard objects that could ricochet or cause damage.
  • Direct air flow by pointing the nozzle down or to one side, working away from solid objects.
  • Clean corners by starting in the corner and moving outward to prevent debris accumulation.
  • Exercise caution near plants to avoid damage from the air force.
  • Always wear safety glasses or similar eye protection, a respirator or facemask in dusty environments, and long pants.
  • Never operate the unit without the blower tube properly attached.

Operating as a Vacuum:

  • For best results, operate the unit at high speed.
  • Move the vacuum tube slowly back and forth about an inch above the ground.
  • Avoid forcing the unit into large piles of debris to prevent clogging.
  • If the unit clogs, stop it, disconnect the extension cord, wait for the impeller to stop, and then remove the vacuum tubes to clear the debris.
  • Always wear safety glasses or similar eye protection, a respirator or facemask in dusty environments, and long pants.
  • Never vacuum stones, gravel, metal, broken glass, or liquids, as this can severely damage the impeller or cause electrical shock.
  • Never run the unit without the vacuum tubes and collection bag properly attached and fully zipped to avoid flying debris and/or impeller contact.
  • Always use the collection bag shoulder strap to maintain control.

Electrical Safety:

  • Use only a 120 A.C. voltage supply.
  • Avoid damp or wet locations, snow, rain, and handling with wet hands.
  • Use outdoor-rated, polarized extension cords marked "W-A" (or "W" in Canada) of the proper gauge (refer to the provided chart for minimum wire gauge recommendations).
  • Ensure the extension cord is in good condition, without cracks or deterioration, and that plug connectors are undamaged.
  • Secure the extension cord to the unit by tying the power plug to the extension cord as shown in the manual.
  • Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection is recommended.
  • Keep the extension cord clear of the operator, obstacles, heat, oil, water, and sharp edges.

General Safety Precautions:

  • Read and follow all safety rules and operating instructions before first use.
  • Do not allow children to use the unit.
  • Keep others (children, animals, bystanders) at least 50 feet (15 meters) away.
  • Secure hair, loose clothing, fingers, and all body parts away from openings and moving parts.
  • Do not operate when tired, ill, upset, or under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication.
  • Avoid dangerous situations, such as use near flammable liquids/gases or in unventilated areas.
  • Never use the unit for spreading chemicals, fertilizers, or toxic materials.
  • Do not use with damaged cord or plug; return to a Sears Service Center for repair.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the unit's longevity and safe operation.

  • Before Each Use: Check for loose fasteners, worn/damaged parts (inlet cover, blower tube, nozzle, vacuum tubes, collection bag).
  • After Each Use: Clean the unit and labels with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
  • Yearly: Clean the collection bag. Remove the bag, empty all contents, turn it inside out, and wash with a water hose. Allow it to dry completely before reuse.
  • Collection Bag Care: The collection bag must be properly emptied after each use and maintained to prevent deterioration and obstruction of air flow. Do not store the bag with leaves or grass inside.
  • Air Intake: Regularly check air intake openings, elbow tube, and vacuum tubes for debris. Keep vents and tubes free of dust, lint, hair, and anything that may reduce air flow.
  • Impeller: Inspect the impeller for cracks or damage. If damaged, do not use the unit and have parts replaced by a Sears Service Center.
  • Internal Service: All internal service, including repairs to housing, switch, or motor, must be performed by qualified service personnel at a Sears Service Center to maintain the double insulation and warranty.

Storage:

  • Prepare the unit for storage at the end of the season or if it will not be used for 30 days or more.
  • Secure the unit before storing or transporting.
  • Store the unit with all guards in place, ensuring no sharp objects can cause injury.
  • Store the unit out of reach of children.
  • Disconnect from the power source.
  • Clean the entire unit, including the inlet cover and any collected dirt, grass, or debris. Inspect the blower and all tubes, ensuring the cover is latched.
  • Store the unit and extension cord in a well-ventilated, covered area to prevent dust and dirt accumulation. Avoid covering with plastic, as it can cause condensation, rust, or corrosion.
  • Check for loose screws, nuts, and bolts, and replace any damaged, worn, or broken parts.

Troubleshooting:

The manual includes a troubleshooting chart to address common issues:

  • Unit fails to operate: Possible causes include the switch being in the Off position, disconnected extension cord, tripped circuit breaker/blown fuse, or mechanical failure. Remedies involve checking the switch, reconnecting the cord, resetting the breaker/fuse, or contacting a Sears Service Center.
  • Unit vibrates abnormally: Likely due to mechanical failure, requiring contact with a Sears Service Center.
  • Impeller will not turn freely: Caused by debris in the air intake area or mechanical failure. Remedies include cleaning the unit and removing debris, or contacting a Sears Service Center.
