Overview

The Babyhawk II HD is a high-definition FPV (First Person View) quadcopter designed for enthusiasts. It features an open-source flight controller and Electronic Speed Controllers (ESCs), allowing for customization and upgrades. The device is designed in California and assembled in China.

Function Description:

The Babyhawk II HD is a drone primarily used for FPV flying, offering a high-definition video feed from its camera. It is controlled via a radio transmitter, allowing pilots to maneuver the aircraft in various flight modes. The drone is pre-programmed and tuned for optimal flight performance, but its open-source nature allows for advanced users to adjust software settings and even reprogram the flight controller. It is capable of both Line of Sight (LOS) and FPV flying.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Diagonal Wheelbase (without paddles): 155mm
  • Maximum Size of Aircraft (without antenna, cable tie): 210mm
  • Aircraft Weight (without battery): 141g
  • Motor: ECO1404-3700KV
  • Propeller: Avan 3.5 inch Propeller
  • Main Flight Controller: F4 (STM32F411 firmware)
  • ESC: 4 in 1 25A ESC
  • Camera & Video Transmitter: Caddx Vista HD VTX + Nebula Pro Camera
  • Recommended Battery: 4S 850mAh (not included)
  • Flight Time: Approximately 4 minutes on a fully charged battery.
  • Flight Controller Firmware: Betaflight 4.2.5
  • Gyro: MPU6000

Product List (Included Components):

  1. Babyhawk II HD × 1
  2. VISTA KIT Instruction manual × 1
  3. Instruction manual card × 1
  4. Extra Propeller (1x CW, 1x CCW)
  5. Screw pack × 1

Usage Features:

  • Flight Control: The left stick controls throttle (up/down) and yaw (left/right rotation), while the right stick controls pitch (forward/backward) and roll (left/right tilt).
  • Arming: To arm the aircraft, move the throttle to the bottom position, then move the AUX 1 switch on the radio to its 3rd (highest) position. Propellers will spin, indicating successful arming. Always disarm immediately after a crash or before handling the drone.
  • Flying Modes: The Babyhawk II HD comes stock in "rate mode," where control sets the angular rate of the aircraft. The AUX 2 switch allows switching between "angle mode" (control sets attitude) when in a high state, and "horizon mode" when in the middle state.
  • Line of Sight (LOS) Flying: Recommended for beginners to learn basic controls without goggles. Practice maintaining constant altitude, pitch, roll, and yaw.
  • First Person View (FPV) Flying: Requires goggles and ensuring the drone and goggles are on the same vtx channel. Pilots should practice flying in a forward direction while maintaining controlled altitude, using the right thumb stick for pitch and the left thumb stick for yaw (like steering a car).
  • On-Screen Display (OSD): The camera video feed includes an OSD overlay displaying important information such as flight time and battery voltage.
  • Beeper: The AUX 3 switch, when set to the 3rd (high) position, activates a beeper, which is useful for locating the drone.
  • Battery Management: Land the Babyhawk II HD when the battery reaches 14.4V. Flying below this voltage is not recommended as it can severely damage the battery.
  • Calibration: After plugging in the battery, place the Babyhawk II HD on a stable surface for a few seconds to allow it to calibrate before flight.

Maintenance Features:

  • Propeller Mounting: The Babyhawk II HD uses Clockwise (CW) and Counter-Clockwise (CCW) propellers. Ensure correct orientation as shown in the diagram (blunt leading edge indicates rotation direction). Push the propeller down onto the motor, then tighten with an M2 screw. Periodically check nut tightness. Incorrect mounting will prevent correct flight.
  • Flight Controller Settings: The flight controller comes pre-programmed and tuned with Betaflight 4.2.5. Users can adjust software settings using Betaflight Configurator (downloadable from https://github.com/betaflight/). The hardware target is STM32F411.
  • Reprogramming Flight Controller:
    1. Put the Flight Controller in DFU mode by pressing the BOOT button while plugging in the micro USB cable to a computer.
    2. Select STM32F411 as the target and firmware (4.2.5) or download the hex file from https://emax-usa.com/. Select Manual Baud Rate with 256000.
    3. Select "Load Firmware (Online)" or "Load Firmware (Local)" if the hex file is already downloaded.
    4. Select "Flash Firmware" to program the flight controller.
  • Setting Correct Settings (CLI Dump File):
    1. Download the latest CLI Dump File from https://emax-usa.com/.
    2. Connect Babyhawk II HD to Betaflight Configurator and select the CLI tab.
    3. Open the CLI Dump File in a text editor and copy all the text.
    4. Paste the settings into the command bar and press enter.
    5. The Babyhawk II HD will reconnect to Betaflight when completed.
  • Disclaimer on Modifications: EMAX does not suggest changing PID settings or upgrading firmware to new versions, as the drone comes with an optimal tune. Such changes can affect flight time, speed, control, and potentially cause excessive heat in the motors.
  • Safety Precautions: Read the disclaimer and instructions carefully. Not suitable for people under 18 without adult supervision. Do not fly around crowds, children, animals, or objects. Ensure battery is fully charged and power connections are secure before every flight. Do not use if physically or mentally unwell, fatigued, or under the influence of substances. Fly in a safe area. Do not modify or use unapproved parts. Avoid harsh environments (wind, rain, lightning, snow) or strong electromagnetic environments. EMAX accepts no liability for damages or injuries from product use.
