Overview

The FURUNO MD-550 is a Multi-Distributor designed for the distribution of navaid data from navigation equipment. It serves as a central hub for managing and routing serial data signals, offering flexibility in how these signals are distributed to various connected devices.

Function Description:

The primary function of the MD-550 is to take input data signals and distribute them to multiple output ports. It supports two main modes of operation:

  • Two Independent Inputs to Four Outputs Each: In this configuration, the device accepts two independent input signals, and each input is then distributed to four separate output ports. This allows for the simultaneous distribution of two distinct data streams to different sets of equipment.
  • One Input to Eight Outputs: Alternatively, the MD-550 can be configured to take a single input signal and distribute it to all eight available output ports. This is useful when a single data source needs to be broadcast to a larger number of receiving devices.

The MD-550 also supports the distribution of AD-10 format signals, providing four outputs from one input in this specific data format. This versatility makes it suitable for integrating with a wide range of marine navigation systems that utilize different data protocols.

The internal settings, which determine the distribution mode (e.g., 1-input/4-output x2 or 1-input/8-output), can be adjusted via jumpers on the circuit board. The factory default setting is for "current loop" and "1 in 4 out" distribution. For 1-input/8-output distribution, a specific jumper (JP7) needs to be reconfigured.

The device includes visual indicators (LEDs) for power, and for each input (IN1 and IN2), which blink when data is being received. This provides a quick way to confirm the operational status and data flow. An interesting usage feature is the ability to confirm the working status of an output port by connecting it to another input port, allowing for self-testing or diagnostic checks.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Port Configuration:
    • Input: 2 ports (data / shift lines)
    • Output: 8 ports (4 outputs for one input)
  • Type of Signal: Serial Signal
    • Input: IEC 61162-1 or NMEA 0183 Ver. 1.5/2.0 (RS-422 or current loop)
    • Output: IEC 61162-1 (RS-422)
  • Transmission Rate: 4800 bps to 38400 bps
  • Power Supply: 12-24 VDC: 0.25-0.15 A
  • Coating Color: 2.5G7/2 Newtone No.5
  • Dimensions: Approximately 216 mm (width) x 145 mm (depth) x 50 mm (height).
  • Weight: Approximately 1.6 kg.

Usage Features:

  • Flexible Data Distribution: The ability to switch between 1-input/8-output and 2-input/4-output configurations provides adaptability for various system architectures.
  • AD-10 Format Support: Specific support for AD-10 format signals enhances compatibility with certain navigation equipment.
  • Visual Status Indicators: LEDs for power and input data (IN1, IN2) allow for easy monitoring of the device's operational state and data reception.
  • Output Port Testing: The manual suggests connecting an output port to another input port to confirm its functionality, which is a practical diagnostic feature.
  • Current Loop Compatibility: The device's output lines are designed to be compatible with standard FURUNO receive circuits (current limiter circuit: 470 Ω, photocoupler: PC-400/900), accepting one unit per output line. For connecting multiple equipment, users are advised to contact a FURUNO agent or dealer.
  • Jumper Settings: Internal jumpers allow for configuration of input signal type (current loop or RS-422) and output distribution mode (1 in 4 out or 1 in 8 out). The factory settings are "current loop" and "1 in 4 out."

Maintenance Features:

  • Installation Considerations:
    • Mounting Location: The MD-550 should be mounted away from radio transmitters, radar, and direction finders (at least 3m), air conditioner vents, direct sunlight, and areas with significant vibration or water spray. It should not be installed on the overhead.
    • Grounding: The equipment cable armor must be grounded to prevent mutual interference and electrical shock.
    • Compass Safe Distances: Specific safe distances are provided to prevent deviation of magnetic compasses: 1.40 m for a standard compass and 0.95 m for a steering compass.
    • Power Switch: As the unit does not have a power switch, an external power switch (local supply) should be installed near the MD-550 if it's not connected to a power switchboard or circuit breaker.
    • Cable Diameter: Cables with a diameter greater than 11.7 mm should not be used.
  • Cable Fabrication Guidance: The manual provides detailed instructions and diagrams for fabricating power cables (DPYC-1.5), twisted pair cables for current loop or RS-422 (TTYCS-1), and four-core twisted cables for AD-10 format (TTYCS-1Q), including dimensions for stripping and crimping.
  • Fuse Replacement: The device includes a FGMB 0.5A 125V fuse (Code No. 000-114-994) as a spare part, indicating that fuse replacement is a possible maintenance task.
  • Packing List: A comprehensive packing list is provided, detailing the unit itself, spare parts (tapping screws, fuse), and installation materials, which aids in verifying completeness upon receipt and for future maintenance.
  • Outline Drawing: Detailed outline drawings with dimensions are included, which are crucial for proper installation and space planning.
  • Interconnection and Schematic Diagrams: The manual provides interconnection diagrams and a full schematic diagram, which are invaluable for troubleshooting, understanding signal flow, and performing advanced maintenance or integration tasks.
