Overview

The Grundig Satellit 750 is a versatile AM/FM-stereo/Shortwave/Airwave Band Radio designed for comprehensive radio reception and listening. This owner's manual provides detailed instructions for operating and maintaining the device, ensuring users can fully utilize its extensive features.

Function Description

The Satellit 750 is primarily a multi-band radio capable of receiving signals across several frequency ranges. It supports AM, FM-stereo, Longwave (LW), Shortwave (SW), and Aircraft Band (AIR) frequencies. A key feature is its Single Side Band (SSB) capability, which allows for the reception of two-way communications, amateur radio, Morse code, weather-fax transmissions, and other "utility" signals often found on shortwave.

The radio incorporates a dual conversion system, enhancing its ability to receive clear signals across various bands. It offers a substantial memory capacity with 1000 station memories, allowing users to store their favorite frequencies for quick access. These memories are organized into two sets: PAGE 0, which includes 500 memories (100 each for MW, SW, SSB, and Air Band; 50 each for FM and LW), and PAGE 1-10, which provides an additional 500 memories (50 per page).

Tuning options are diverse, including Auto, Manual, and Direct frequency key-in. The Auto Tuning Storage (ATS) function is particularly useful for automatically scanning and storing the strongest LW, AM, or FM stations into memory, simplifying the setup process for new locations or bands.

Beyond basic radio reception, the Satellit 750 includes a 24-hour clock and a dual alarm clock function. These allow users to set two independent alarms to turn the radio on or off at specified times, either to a radio broadcast or an electronic buzzer. A sleep timer function is also available, enabling the radio to play for a set duration (from 1 to 120 minutes) before automatically turning off.

For audio output, the radio features a built-in speaker and a line-in socket, which can be used to connect external audio devices like MP3 players, effectively turning the Satellit 750 into an external speaker. Additionally, line-out sockets (left and right) are provided on the back, allowing radio broadcasts to be transferred to other recording or amplification devices. An earphone socket is located on the front for private listening.

The radio's design includes a 360-degree rotating AM antenna, which can be swiveled for optimal AM reception. For SW, FM, and AIR bands, a telescopic antenna should be fully extended. External antenna jacks are also available for SW, AM, and FM, allowing users to connect advanced performance antennas for improved reception.

Usage Features

Operating the Satellit 750 involves several user-friendly controls. The POWER button turns the radio on and off. Volume is adjusted via a VOLUME knob on the lower left front. Band selection is managed through dedicated buttons: FM, MW/LW (pressed sequentially for MW or LW), SW (pressed sequentially for different shortwave bands), and AIR.

Tuning in stations can be done in multiple ways. Direct Frequency Entry allows users to input known frequencies using the numeric keypad. For unknown stations or general browsing, the up/down tuning buttons can be used for quick, short presses to tune up or down frequency, or a longer press to engage Auto Tuning, which scans and pauses on stations. The TUNING knob offers both FAST and SLOW tuning modes, with the STEP button toggling between them and also serving to lock the tuning knob.

The radio offers control over audio quality with BASS and TREBLE knobs, allowing users to customize the sound to their preference. The FM ST. (FM Stereo) button toggles stereo reception mode for FM, indicated on the display.

For optimizing reception, the Satellit 750 includes an ANTENNA ATTENUATOR (ANT.ATT) button, which adjusts the signal strength indicator and display illumination across three levels (high, medium, low gain). This helps manage strong signals and reduce interference. The RF GAIN CONTROL further refines reception by improving the radio's rejection of interference from adjacent frequencies, particularly on Shortwave. The SQUELCH CONTROL, mainly used in the aircraft band, eliminates background noise by turning a knob clockwise to engage and counterclockwise to disengage.

The BANDWIDTH button allows users to choose between wide or narrow selectivity, displayed as WIDE or NARROW. Wide selectivity generally provides better audio fidelity, while narrow selectivity can help reduce interference on crowded frequencies.

Storing frequencies into memory is a straightforward process. Users can manually store a tuned station by pressing the MEMORY button, selecting a page and memory location using the PAGE button and up/down buttons, and then confirming. The "M" button offers an automatic storage option, placing the current frequency into the next available memory slot. Listening to stored memories involves pressing the VM/VF button to access the memory mode and then using the tuning knob or up/down buttons to navigate through saved stations. Auto-scanning through memories is also possible by pressing an up/down tuning button for about 2 seconds.

The LIGHT/SNOOZE button provides temporary illumination for the signal strength indicator and display (about 5 seconds with a quick press) or continuous illumination with a long press. This button also temporarily deactivates the alarm for 10 minutes.

Maintenance Features

The manual emphasizes several important maintenance and safety guidelines. To power the radio, users can install 4 D alkaline, lithium, or Ni-MH batteries or use the included 6 VDC AC adapter. A battery symbol on the LCD indicates the power source. In case of AC power failure, installed batteries will automatically take over.

Preventing battery leakage is crucial for the longevity of the device. Users are advised to use only high-quality alkaline, lithium, or rechargeable nickel-metal-hydride batteries and never intermix old with new, or different brands or types of batteries. Damage from battery acid leakage is not covered by the product's warranty.

The manual provides instructions for setting AM and FM frequency spacing and ranges for regions outside North America, ensuring optimal performance globally. This involves turning the radio off, pressing the ENTER button, and inputting specific numeric codes (e.g., 09 or 10 for AM spacing, 88, 87, or 76 for FM starting frequency) followed by ENTER.

A RESET button is located under the TUNING knob. This button should only be pressed if the radio stops functioning properly, as it will reset the AM station spacing, requiring users to reconfigure it for their region.

An empty compartment on the back of the radio is provided for user convenience, allowing for storage of small items.

The SYSTEM CODE SETTING feature allows users to customize memory page allocation, AM step frequency, and FM frequency range. This is accessed by turning the radio off, pressing ENTER, and inputting specific two-digit codes (e.g., 00, 20, 25, 50 for memory pages; 09, 10 for AM step; 29, 28 for battery type; 76, 87 for FM range) followed by ENTER.

Safety warnings include not exposing the appliance to rain, moisture, or extended periods in water, protecting it from high humidity, operating within a specified temperature range (0 °C to 40 °C), unplugging immediately if liquid is spilled, cleaning only with a dry cloth (avoiding detergents or chemical solvents), and unplugging external antennas during lightning storms. Users are also warned not to remove the cover and to refer servicing to qualified personnel.

For external antennas, the manual advises unplugging all outdoor-mounted antennas when a lightning storm is predicted to prevent damage.

The product also adheres to environmental disposal guidelines, indicating that all electrical and electronic products must be collected separately by a local collection system, and should not be disposed of with normal household waste.
