Questions and Answers

Overview

This document provides comprehensive instructions for the safe and effective use of the Makita Cordless Hedge Trimmer models DUH506 and DUH606. It covers functional descriptions, usage features, and maintenance procedures, ensuring users can operate and care for their tool properly.

Function Description

The Makita Cordless Hedge Trimmer is designed for trimming hedges. It is equipped with electronic functions for easy operation, including constant speed control and an electric brake. The constant speed control maintains a consistent rotation speed regardless of load conditions, while the electric brake quickly stops the shear blades upon releasing the switch trigger. An accidental re-start preventive function ensures that the tool does not start if the battery cartridge is installed while the switch trigger is pulled; the trigger must be released and then pulled again to start the tool.

The tool features a tool/battery protection system that automatically cuts off power to the motor to extend tool and battery life. This system activates under various conditions, such as overload, overheating, or low battery capacity. When the tool stops due to overload, overheating, or insufficient battery capacity, the user is prompted to take corrective actions like turning the tool off and on, charging the battery, or allowing the tool and battery to cool down. If the tool stops due to entangled branches or debris, the user must switch off the tool, remove the battery cartridge, and clear the obstruction using tools like pliers.

The battery cartridge includes an indicator to show the remaining battery capacity. By pressing a check button, indicator lamps light up for a few seconds, displaying the charge level in increments (75-100%, 50-75%, 25-50%, 0-25%). The indicator also signals when the battery needs charging or if it has malfunctioned.

Usage Features

To operate the hedge trimmer, the user must hold the front handle, press the switch lever, and pull the switch trigger. Releasing either the switch trigger or the switch lever will stop the tool. For safety, the tool is equipped with a switch lever that prevents unintended starting; users are warned never to bypass or defeat this safety feature.

The document emphasizes several safety warnings for operation. Users must keep all body parts away from the blade, especially when removing cut material or handling the tool. The hedge trimmer should be carried by the handle with the blade stopped and covered, taking care not to operate any power switch inadvertently. When transporting or storing, the blade cover must always be fitted to prevent personal injury.

Users are advised to check hedges and bushes for foreign objects like wire fences or hidden wiring before operation. The tool is not intended for use by children or young persons under 18, unless undergoing supervised training. First-time users should receive guidance from an experienced user. It is crucial to operate the tool only when in good physical condition, avoiding use under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication. Work gloves of stout leather and sturdy shoes with anti-skid soles are recommended.

The tool should be held firmly with both hands during use and is intended for operation at ground level, not on ladders or unstable supports. Users are warned against overreaching, especially from a ladder. The document also advises against cutting branches thicker than 10 mm in diameter, recommending the use of branch cutters for larger branches. It explicitly states not to cut dead trees or hard objects, nor to trim grass or weeds with the shear blades, as this can damage the tool or cause entanglement.

For basic trimming, the shear blades should be tilted toward the trimming direction and moved calmly and slowly at a rate of 3 to 4 seconds per meter. For an even hedge top, a string can be tied at the desired height as a guide. When trimming hedge sides, it is recommended to cut from bottom to top. For shaping round hedges, trimming from the root to the top is suggested for a beautiful finish.

An optional chip receiver accessory can be installed on either side of the tool to gather discarded leaves, making cleanup easier. However, the blade cover cannot be installed when the chip receiver is in place, so the chip receiver must be removed before installing the blade cover for storage or transport.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the safety and reliability of the Makita Cordless Hedge Trimmer. Before any maintenance, the tool must be switched off, and the battery cartridge removed.

Shear Blade Maintenance: Before or hourly during operation, low-viscosity oil (machine oil or spray-type lubricating oil) should be applied to the shear blades. After operation, dust should be removed from both sides of the shear blades with a wired brush, wiped clean with a cloth, and then re-oiled. Users are warned not to wash the shear blades with water, as this can cause rust and damage. Dirt and corrosion increase blade friction and shorten battery operating time.

Shear Blade Replacement: The document provides detailed steps for installing and removing shear blades. This involves placing the tool upside down, removing bolts, covers, and plates, and then carefully detaching the old blades. When installing new blades, users must ensure the rear edges are aligned and the sleeves are properly attached. A small amount of grease should be applied to the inner periphery of the shear blade holes. Gloves should always be worn when handling shear blades to prevent direct contact.

Shear Blade Grinding: If the shear blades are deformed, they should be replaced. For grinding, the battery cartridge is installed, the tool is turned on to position the upper and lower blades alternately, then turned off, and the battery cartridge removed. The upper and lower blades are then ground from two directions with a file set at a 35° angle. Burrs should be removed with a dressing stone.

Grease Lubrication: Every 50 operating hours, the tool requires grease lubrication. This involves removing a bolt from the lubrication hole, removing the cap from the grease vessel, aligning the vessel's outlet with the hole, and then turning the vessel to attach it. Approximately 3g of grease should be applied. After lubrication, the grease vessel is removed, and the bolt is tightened.

Tool Cleaning and Storage: The tool should be cleaned by wiping off dust with a dry cloth or a cloth dipped in soapy water and wrung out. Solvents like gasoline, benzine, thinner, or alcohol should never be used, as they can cause discoloration, deformation, or cracks. For storage, the tool should be hung from a nail or screw using the hook hole at the bottom. The blade cover must be attached to ensure the blades are not exposed. The tool should be stored out of reach of children, in a dry place, away from moisture or rain.

Battery Maintenance: To maximize battery life, the battery cartridge should be charged before it is completely discharged, and charging should stop when it is full. Overcharging shortens service life. Charging should occur at room temperature (10°C - 40°C). If the battery cartridge is hot, it should be allowed to cool before charging. When not in use for extended periods (more than six months), the battery cartridge should be removed from the tool or charger and charged. Used battery cartridges should be disposed of safely according to local regulations.
