This document provides the instruction manual for the Makita Cordless Grass Trimmer, model DUR193. It covers essential information for safe operation, assembly, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the device.
The Makita Cordless Grass Trimmer DUR193 is a battery-operated power tool designed specifically for cutting grass and light weeds. It is not intended for other purposes such as hedge cutting, which could lead to injury. The tool is equipped with a nylon cutting head that utilizes a bump and feed mechanism to extend the nylon cord. When the tool is running, the cutting head can be bumped against the ground to feed out more cord, which is then automatically cut to the proper length by a built-in cutter.
Function Description:
The grass trimmer operates on an 18V D.C. battery cartridge. It features a switch trigger and a lock-off button to prevent unintentional starting. To operate the tool, the lock-off button must be pressed before pulling the switch trigger. Releasing the switch trigger stops the tool. The lock-off button can be pressed from either the right or left side. The tool is equipped with a battery protection system that automatically cuts off power to the motor to extend battery life under conditions such as overload or low battery voltage. An indication lamp on the battery cartridge allows users to check the remaining battery capacity by pressing a check button. The lamp also blinks or lights up in red to indicate low battery, empty battery, or tool overload.
Usage Features:
The DUR193 offers several adjustable features to enhance user comfort and efficiency. The overall length of the shaft can be adjusted by opening a lock lever, extending or shortening the shaft, and then closing the lever. The angle of the loop handle is also adjustable; users can loosen a thumb nut, set the handle to a desired angle, and then tighten the nut firmly. Additionally, the cutting angle of the motor housing can be adjusted in 5 steps by pressing an angle adjustment button while changing the motor housing's angle. This allows the user to position the nylon cutting head flat to the ground for optimal cutting.
For safety, a wire guard is attached to the motor housing to control the cutting range and reduce the risk of damaging objects. When not in use, the wire guard can be lifted to an idle position. The tool is designed to be held with both hands and moved from right to left slowly, cutting grass in multiple passes from the top. It is crucial to avoid cutting high grass at once near the root, as this can entangle the nylon cutting head and overload the motor. Users should also avoid contacting the ground surface with the nylon cutting head to prevent motor overload and damage.
The trimmer can be used near trees, blocks, bricks, or stones by holding and tilting it at a height where the nylon cutting head does not touch the ground, using the nylon cord tip to "knock" the ground. It is recommended to keep the tool more than 5 cm away from such objects to prevent cord tearing. The tool can also function as an edger for cutting grass along bricks or blocks. To do this, the shaft is extended to its maximum length, and the motor housing is rotated 180 degrees. The wire guard is lifted, and the trimmer is moved in parallel along the edges.
A shoulder harness is provided for comfortable operation, which attaches to a hanger on the tool. Users should ensure the hook is securely attached to prevent injury. If using a backpack-type power supply, the shoulder harness included with the tool package should not be used; instead, Makita's recommended hanging band should be utilized.
Maintenance Features:
Regular maintenance is crucial for the tool's safety and reliability. Before any inspection, maintenance, or adjustment, the tool must be switched off, and the battery cartridge removed. The tool should be cleaned by wiping off dust, dirt, or cut grass with a dry cloth or one dipped in soapy water. Any cut-off grass adhered to the motor housing must be removed.
The nylon cord needs replacement when it no longer feeds. Only nylon cord with the specified diameter should be used; heavier lines, metal wire, or rope can damage the tool and cause injury. When replacing the cord, ensure the cover of the nylon cutting head is properly secured to the housing to prevent it from flying apart. Care must be taken not to contact the nylon cord cutter on the protector during installation or removal.
The instruction manual emphasizes checking the cutting tool, protective devices, and shoulder harness before and after each use. Loose fasteners and damaged parts, especially in the cutting tool, should be inspected. Ventilation openings must be kept clear of debris. Any repairs, maintenance, or adjustments should be performed by Makita Authorized or Factory Service Centers using genuine Makita replacement parts.
For storage, the wire guard should be raised, the shaft shortened, and the loop handle folded. The equipment should be stored in a dry, locked location out of children's reach.
Battery cartridge maintenance includes charging before complete discharge, avoiding overcharging, and charging at room temperature (10 °C - 40 °C). The battery cartridge should be removed from the tool or charger when not in use for extended periods (more than six months). Users are warned against disassembling, tampering with, or exposing the battery cartridge to fire, excessive heat, or water. Shorting the battery terminals with conductive materials is also prohibited. If the battery operating time becomes excessively shorter, it should be stopped immediately to prevent overheating.
