BiodieselusageinNEWHOLLANDCONSTRUCTIONproducts
IntroductiontoFattyAcidMethylEster(FAME)biodiesel
FAMEbiodiesel,calledbiodieselfuelinthefollowingsection,consistsofafamilyoffuelsderivedfromvegetableoils
treatedwithmethylesters.
Therearetwomainbiodieselfueltypes:RapeseedMethylEster(RME)andSoybeanMethylEster(SME).RMEisa
blendofrapeseedandsunowermethylester,andisthepreferredcropinEurope.SMEisthepreferredcropinthe
UnitedStates.
Biodieselfuelisarenewablealternativefuelsource.Itsuseanddevelopmentispromotedworldwide,especiallyin
EuropeandintheUnitedStates.
NOTICE:Beawarethattheuseofbiodieselfuelthatdoesnotcomplywiththestandardsmentionedinthissection
couldleadtoseveredamagetotheengine,fuelsystemoraftertreatmentsystemofyourmachine.Theuseofnon-
approvedfuelsmayvoidNEWHOLLANDCONSTRUCTIONWarrantycoverage.
Biodieselfuelcanbeusedtorundieselenginesaspurebiodieselfuelorwhenblendedwithstandarddieselfuel:

B5:indicatestheblendof5%biodieseland95%dieselfuels.
•
B7:indicatestheblendof7%biodieseland93%dieselfuels.
•
B20:indicatestheblendof20%biodieseland80%dieselfuels.
•
B100:indicatespurebiodiesel,or100%biodieselfuel.Donotuse.
Biodieselfuelhasseveralpositivefeaturesincomparisonwithdieselfuel:
•
Biodieselfueladdslubricitytothefuel,whichisbenecialinmanycircumstances,particularlyassulfurandaro-
maticsareremovedfromthefuel.
•
Biodieselhasagreatercetanenumberandburnscleaner.
•
Biodieselproduceslessparticulatematterandreducessmokeemissions.
•
Biodieselisfullybiodegradableandnon-toxic.
Dieselandbiodieselfuelspecications
Tier4adieselfuelspecicationsarecoveredbythefollowing:
•
ASTMD975-10,StandardSpecicationforDieselFuelOils.(15ppmsulfurmaximum.)
Biodieselblendsarecoveredby:
•
UnitedStatesDieselFuelSpecicationASTMD6751-09Aallowsupto5%biodieselsince2009.UnitedStatesfuel
suppliersareallowedtouseupto5%biodieselfuel(B5)tosupplythenetwork.
•
UnitedStatesBiodieselFuelSpecicationASTMD7467-09Aprovidesspecicationsfordieselandbiodieselblends
fromB5toB20.
Purebiodiesel(B100)specicationiscoveredbythefollowingrequirements:
•
ASTMD6751-09A-Standardspecicationforbiodieselfuelblendstock(B100)formiddledistillatefuels.
NOTE:ASTMD6751specicationhasbeenupdatedtoimprovethequalityofbiodieselinthemarketplace.
Beforerawoilcanbeconvertedintousablebiodieselfuel,itmustundergotransestericationtoremoveglycerides.
Duringthetransestericationprocess,theoilreactswithanalcoholtoseparatetheglycerinefromthefatorvegetable
oil.Thisprocessleavesbehindtwoproducts:methylester(thechemicalnameforbiodiesel)andglycerine(abyprod-
uctusuallysoldforuseinsoapsorotherproducts).
NOTICE:BiodieselfuelsapprovedforuseintheNEWHOLLANDCONSTRUCTIONequipmentmustbetransesteri-
edandcomplywiththeNorthAmericaStandardASTMD6751.
NOTICE:ColdPressedBiodiesel,ColdPressedOil,StraightVegetableOil(SVO),ormoregenerallyunrenedveg-
etableoilsusedasmotorfuel,arefuelsthatarenormallymadefromRapeseedoilorsimilarhighoilcontentcrops.
