General
Yourtractorhasbeenbuiltusingmetrichardware.
NOTE:Besuretousethehardwarespeciedwhenusingtappedholes,astryingtoinstallametricboltinaninch
thread,oraninchboltinametricthread,willdamagethethread.
Certainhardwaremustbetightenedtospecictorquespecications.Ifspecictorquespecicationsarenotnoted,
tightenthehardwaretothestandardtorquechartspecicationlistedinthismanual.
Plating
HardwareusedonNEWHOLLANDbalersisplatedwithzincchromate(goldcolor).Goldcoloredhardwarehas
differenttorquingrequirementsfromunplatedorzincplated(silvercolor)hardwarebecauseofthedifferenceinthe
coefcientoffrictionoftheplatingmaterial.Thetorquechartsinthismanuallistthecorrectspecicationsforgold,
silver,andunplatedbolts.
NutTightening
Wheneverpossible,thenutshouldbetightened,nottheheadofthebolt.Whentighteningusingthebolthead,the
clamploadcanbelostbecausesomeofthetorqueappliedtwiststheboltinsteadoftensioning(stretching)it.The
tensionontheboltiswhatholdsthejointtogether.
Approximately90%ofthetorqueappliedduringassemblygoestoovercomingfrictionbetweentheparts.Theother
10%isusedtotension(stretch)thebolt.Afterassembly,thefrictionalforcesdisappear,whichisthebasisforthe
saying’Ifitdoesnotfailduringassembly,itwillnotfailinservice.’Theboltmaylaterfailduetootherfactors,butnot
frombeingovertightened.
Locknuts
Mostlocknutsarecoatedwithaspeciallubricantthatisdrytothetouch.Anytimealocknutisused,alowerthan
normaltorqueisrequired.Refertothetorquechartsinthismanualforspecicvalues.
JamNuts
Whenusingajamnuttolockaregularnut,thejamnutshouldbeinstalledrstandtightenedtoonehalftherecom-
mendedtorque,thenheldinplacewhileinstallingaregularnuttotherecommendedtorque.
ThreadLubrication
Theadditionofantiseizecompound,Molykote,oil,graphite,oranyotherlubricanttoaboltdecreasesthefriction
betweenitandanut.Thismakesitnecessarytoreducetherecommendedtorquetopreventovertensioningofthe
bolt.Whenusingthetorquechartsinthismanual,decreasethevalueby20%wheneveralubricantisused.
