3. GLOSSARY OF WOODWORKING TERMS
Arbor
The shaft on which a blade or cutting tool is mounted.
Bevel Cut
A cut made with the blade at an angle other than 90° to the mitre table.
Blade Path
The area over, under, behind or in front of the blade. Concerning the workpiece, the line that will be, or has been,
cut by the blade.
Compound Mitre Cut
A compound mitre cut is a mitre cut with a bevel.
Crosscut
A cut made across the grain of the workpiece.
Freehand
Cutting without using a fence, mitre gauge, fixing, clamp or other appropriate device to prevent the workpiece twisting
or moving during cutting.
Gum
A sticky sap-based residue of wood products.
“Keep hands clear” zone
The area between the lines marked on the left and right-hand sides of the mitre table. This zone is identified by stickers
showing a crossed-out hand, affixed inside the cutting lines on the mitre table.
Kickback
Sudden recoil of the workpiece being cut. Usually caused by the workpiece not being against the fence, hitting the blade
or being accidentally pushed against the blade rather than a saw kerf being cut in the workpiece.
Mitre Cut
A cut made at an angle other than 90° to the fence.
Resin
A sticky, sap-based substance that has hardened.
Revolutions per minute (rpm)
The number of revolutions made by a turning object in one minute.
Set
Operation which consists in setting the tip of the saw blade teeth to the right or left to improve clearance and make it easier
for the body of the blade to penetrate the material.
Through cut
A cut where the blade cuts through the entire thickness of the workpiece.
Workpiece
The item which is being cut.
The surfaces of a workpiece are commonly referred to as faces, ends and edges.
Zero Clearance Throat Plate
A plastic throat plate inserted in the mitre table that allows for blade clearance. When you make your first cut with your mitre
saw, the saw blade cuts a slot through the throat plate the exact width of the blade. This provides for a cleaner cut since
the free space around the blade is minimal.
