Scheduling: Shaping
• Max rate (10K to 1 Gbps)
Shaped queue like a “virtual wire”
Packets clock out exactly at shaped rate
• Hold packets in queue when rate exceeded
• Example use:
Shape a bursty application to 1 Mbps to smooth it
• Supported on all ports, typically used with strict
priority queue

• Minimum rate (32 Kbps to 1 Gbps)
Rate is guaranteed minimum
• Scheduling algorithm:
If below share rate, queue is high priority
High priority queues serviced first
• Sharing only on non-blocking gigabit ports in Supervisor IV
and II-Plus
• Supported on ALL ports on Supervisor Engine V
