Commutator Inspection
Surfaces of Commutators that need Replacement
Marks on the Commutator Surface
Marks on the commutator surface are an indication
that metal has moved from the commutator surface
to the carbon brushes. Marks will cause fast brush
wear.
Threads on the Commutator Surface
Threads (grooves that look like threads) on the
commutator surface, will also cause fast brush wear.
Grooves on the Commutator Surface
Grooves on the commutators surface are caused by
a cutting material in the brush or atmosphere.
Copper Drag on the Commutator Surface
Copper drag is an extra amount of commutator
material at the back edge of the commutator bars.
