Upper
Suspension
Arm

spring
front
mounting
bolt
(Fig.
12).
2.
Tap
the
spring
mounting
bolt
out
of the
bushings
and
hanger,
then
separate
the
nager
from
the
spring.
Remove
the
bushings.
3.
Position
the
bushings
in the
front
eye
of
the
spring.
Assemble
the
front
hanger to
the
spring
eye
and
install
the
spring
mounting
bolt
through
the
hanger,
bushings,
and
spring
eye
as
shown in
Fig. 12.
4.
Install the
lock
washer and
nut
on the
mounting
bolt
and
tighten to
the
specified
torque.
REAR SHACKLE AND
HANGER ASSEMBLY
Inspect the rear shackle
bushings,
and
studs for wear
or
damage. Re
place parts where
necessary
(Fig.
13).
If the
rear shackle
bushings
are to
be
replaced,
it
will
be
necessary
to re
move the rear
hanger
assembly.
Tor
que the
hanger
attaching
bolts
to
specification
when
reinstalled.
BALL
JOINT
REPLACEMENT
The
lower
ball
joint cannot
be re
paired
and
must
be
replaced if it
is
worn
or
damaged.
1.
Remove
the
lower arm
as out
lined
in
the
Lower
Arm
procedure
under
Removal.
2.
Remove the
ball
joint from
the
arm.
If
the
ball
joint is
riveted to
the
arm,
drill a
1/8-inch pilot
hole com
pletely
through
each
rivet,
and
then
drill
off
the
rivet
head
through
the
pilot
hole
with a
3/8-inch
drill.
Drive
all
rivets
out
of
the
holes.
3.
Clean
the
end
of
the
arm,
and
remove
all
burrs
from
the
hole
edges.
Check
for
cracks
in
the
metal at
the
holes,
and
replace
the
arm
if it is
cracked.
4.
Install
a
new ball joint
on the
arm.
Use
only
the
specified
bolts,
nuts,
and
washers. Do
not
attempt to
rivet
the
new ball joint to
the arm.
5.
Torque the
ball
joint
attaching
nuts
and bolts to
specifications.
6.
Install the
lower arm
as
outlined
in
the
Lower Arm
procedure
under
Installation.
REAR
SPRING
OVERHAUL-
SPRING
REMOVED
FRONT HANGER
ASSEMBLY
If
the front hanger or
bushings are
to
be
replaced,
proceed as
follows:
1.
Remove the nut
and
lock washer
SPRINGS
LEAVES AND
TIE BOLT
Check for broken
spring
leaves.
In
spect
the
anti-squeak
inserts
between
the
leaves,
and replace
them if
they
are
worn. The
spring
leaves must
be
dry
and free of oil
and dirt
before
new
inserts are
installed.
Inspect the
spring
clips
for
worn
or
damaged threads (Fig.
11).
Check
the
spring
clip
plate and
insulator
retain
ers for distortion.
If the
spring
center
tie
bolt
requires
replacement,
clamp
the
spring
in a
vise
to
keep
the
spring
compressed
during
bolt removal
and
installation.
