Stage2:PhysicalSurvey
3. Ontheurbanmap,checkfordevelopedareassituatedbetweenthetwoinstallation
sites.Payattentiontotheseareaswhenperformingthephysicalsitesurvey;there
maybetallbuildings,RFtowers,ortransmitters,whichcouldcauseinterferenceto
thelink.
4. Checktheareabetweenthetwositesforobstructionssuchas:
• Highground‐hi llsormountains
• Lakesorlargebodiesofwater.WaterhasareflectioneffectonRFsignalslikeabuilding.
Thistypeofreflectioncausesthereceivedamplitudetobereduced.Asaruleofthumb,
thepresenceofalargebodyofwaterbetweenthelinksitesmaydoubletherequired
antennaheight.
5. Determineandrecordthecompassbearingsbetweenbothradiounits,relativeto
north.
6. Ifthereareobstructionsbetweenthetwosites,calculatetheFresnelZone(seeLink
BudgetCalculatorfordetails).
7. Ifthesitechosendoesnotmeetrequirements,consideralternativesites.
8. UsetheLinkBudgetCalculator(ontheCDsuppliedwiththeequipmentorusingthe
RADWINManager)todeterminetheexpectedperformance.
3.5Stage2:PhysicalSurvey
Duringthisstage,youreviewtheenvironmentoftheproposedinstallationlocation,toensure
thatthelinksitesaresuitableforthewirelessnetwork.Theresultsofthephysicalsitesurvey
shouldberecorded.
Toperformaphysicalsurvey:
1. Fromthecompassreadingstakeninthepreliminarysurvey,findtheazimuth(hori‐
zontalposition)thatthefirstODUshouldfacetowardsthesecondODU.
2. Usingbinoculars,locatean yobstructionssuchastalltrees,highbuildings,hillsor
mountains.LookforotherRFtowersbetweenthetw
osites.Markthelocationsof
theobstructionsonthemap.
3. DeterminethelocationfortheODU(havingregardforexistingrooftopinstallations
andtowerspace).Itshouldbeaboveanyobstructions,consideringtheFresnelzone
(seeLinkBudgetCalculator).
4. Ifyouneedtoinstalltheradio’santennaonatower,makesurethatthetowerisfar
awayfromoverheadelectricpowerlines.
Whenwemention“ODU”,wemeananoutdoorradiounit,oritsantenna.Ifyou
areworkingwiththeRADWIN2000i,whichisanindoorunitandrequiresan
externalantenna,replacetheterm“ODU”with“theradiounit’santenna”.
