Troubleshooting
CONTENT OF SECTION
This section provides troubleshooting and repair
instructions for the more common and easily cor¬
rected problems. For other problems, it is recom¬
mended that you contact your dealer.
WARNING
To avoid serious injury, perform maintenance
on the mower only when the engine is stopped.
On electric start models, remove the key from
the ignition switch. On manual start models,
make sure that the speed control knob is
placed in the stop position.
TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURES
Troubleshooting procedures are provided in figure
25. To use these procedures, first locate the prob¬
lem that you have encountered listed in the left
column. Check the possible causes (in the right
column) one at a time in the order that they are
given. Correct any problems that are found and
operate the mower again to be sure that you have
eliminated the trouble.

Cause
1.
Engine will not start.
A.
No fuel in tank. Refill tank
B.
Speed control not on "Start"; reposition.
C.
Spark plug wire not connected; reconnect.
D.
Ignition wire not connected fully. Check all
connections.
E.
Engine flooded. Turn speed control knob to
"STOP", crank six times, then attempt to start
engine with speed control on START .
F.
Sheared flywheel key.
2.
Mower will not drive (self-propelled
only).
A.
Drive rollers slipping at the tires. Adjust the con¬
trol rod turnbuckles.
B.
Drive belt slipping. Clean belt
C.
Drive belt broken; replace with proper belt.
3.
Mower cut uneven
A.
Wheels not leveled properly. Check wheel adjust¬
ments.
B.
Mower blade dull. Check/resharpen.
4.
Mower vibrates excessively
A.
Blade mounting screws are loose. Tighten to 17
to 20 foot-pounds.
B.
Engine crankshaft bent.
C.
Out of balance blade.
