Release
the
key
(to
cool
starter)
IF
the
engine
has
been"
cranked
for
approximately
5
seconds
fails
iQ
start
.
Check
the
fuel
and
controls
and
then
try
again.
NOTE:
Should
the
battery
ever
be
too
weak
to
start
the
engine
(on
Electric
Start
models),
remove
the
battery
and
connect
to
a
charger.
Never
"Boost"
charge
a
battery.
To
prevent
possible
battery
damage
when
charging,
always
slow
("Trickle")
charge
the
battery.
STEP
5:
ENGINE
WARM-UP
-
After
a
brief
period
at
the
CHOKE
position,
move
the
Engine
Control
Lever
(8-C)
rearward
until
the
engine
runs
smoothly.
Set
the
lever
at
or
near
FAST
for
best
cutting
and
bagg¬
ing
performance.
STEP
6:
STOP
ENGINE
by
turning
the
Ignition
Key
(11-
C)
LEFT
to
OFF.
STARTING/STOPPING
RIDER
Become
thoroughly
familiar
with
the
location
and
function
of
the
forward
&
reverse
direction
controls:
CLUTCH/BRAKE
pedal
(5-C),
PARKING
BRAKE
Lever
(13
C),
and
the
TRANSMISSION
SHIFT
lever
(17-C).

FORWARD
DIRECTION:
When
partially
depressed,
the
CLUTCH/BRAKE
pedal
(5-C)
functions
as
a
clutch,
permitting
shifting
from
neutral
into
either
forward
or
reverse.
Further
depression
of
the
pedal
provides
braking.
When
depressed,
the
pedal
can
be
set
for
parking
.

After
shifting
the
TRANSMISSION
SHIFT
lever
(17-C)
Into
the
#1
speed
position,
release
the
pedal
to
begin
forward
movement.
Move
the
lever
forward
or
rearvwwd
while
traveling
forward
(withoiA
depressing
the
pedal)
to
shift
into
higher
or
lower
FORWARD
speeds.
Always
depress
the
CLUTCH/BRAKE

before
shifting
Into
or
out
of
NEUTRAL.
FAILURE
TO
DO
THIS
WILL
RESULT
IN
DRIVE
TIRE
DAMAGE.

REVERSE
DIRECTION:
Before
shifting
into
reverse,
fully
depress
the
CLUTCH/BRAKE
pedal
(5-C)
to
stop.
Move
the
TRANSMISSION
SHIFT
lever
(17-C)
rearward
Into
REV
position
and
then
completely
release
the
pedal
to
begin
moving
in
reverse.
To
stop
while
in
reverse,
fully
depress
the
pedal.
SMOOTH
START
CLUTCH
OPERATION
AFTER
the
ground
speed
selector
has
been
engaged,
releasing
foot
pressure
(xi
the
clutch
pedal
brings
the
rubber
surface
of
the
driven
disc
into
contact
with
the
relating
metal
surface
of
the
drive
disc,
and
begins
the
driven
disc's
rotation
mode.
As
more
fod
pressure
is
released,
the
brake
lining
(yn
the
inside
of
the
rubber
disc
will
continue
to
srTKX>thly
exert
MORE
(x-essure
(ad¬
ditional
frietbn)
against
the
surface
of
the
driven
disc
hub.
The
driven
disc
then
transfers
the
rotatior^i
movement
(energy)
to
the
chain
case,
which
in
turn,
drives
the
transmission.
The
more
pressure
applied,
the
better
the
pulling
power!

NOTE:
If
the
operator
"rides
the
ciutch"
excessively
during
operation,
or
when
starling
motion,
or
releases
foot
pressure
on
the
pedal
too
slowly,
the
machine
may
have
a
tendency
to
lope
or
make
jerky
movements.
The
unpleasant
grinding
sound
which
is
emitted
is
a
symptom
of
the
condition.
This
method
of
operation
wili
not
harm
the
machine;
however,
the
operator
should
be
instructed
to
smoothly
and
slowly
"FULLY"
release
the
foot
from
the
pedal
to
eliminate
this
condition.
