CHAPTER 11
SOUND
AND
MUSIC
The
Atari
XL
has
exceptional
sound
generating
facilities.
The
built-in
sound
generator
(POKEY)
is
a
synthesiser
on a
chip,
with
four
voices, a wide
range
of
octaves,
and
control
of
the
type
of
tone
produced
by
each
voice.
The
XL
has
no
built-in
loudspeaker,
but
uses
the
loudspeaker
of
the
television
or
monitor
to
which
it
is
connected.
WHAT
IS SOUND?
Sound
is
the
effect on
our
ears
of
vibrations
in
the
air
caused
by
a
vibrating
object
such
as
a
guitar
string
or
a
loudspeaker.

If
we
plot
a
graph
of
the
way
a
vibrating
object
moves
over
time
we
get
an
undulating
shape
which
is
called
a (wave'.
What
you
hear
depends
on
the
properties
of
the
wave:
the
rate
at
which
the
object
vibrates
(the
frequency
of
the
vibration)
