mating
surfaces

OIL PAN, OIL FILTER, AND OIL PUMP AND PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE
The
inspection
and
repair
procedur
es
applicable
to
the
above
components
are
presented
below
.
In
addi-
tion,
the
r
emova
l,
disassembly,
assembly,
and
in
sta
lla
-
tion
procedures
for
the
oil filter
are
given,
inasm
u
ch
as
these
procedures
are
ap
plicable
to
all
engines.
a. Oil
Pan.
R
emove
the
oil
pan.
Scr
ape
a
ny
dirt
or
metal
part-
icles fr
om
the
in
side
of
th
e
pan.
Sc
rape
all
o
ld
gasket
mat
erial
from
the
gas
ket
s
urface.
W
as
h
the
pan
in
a
solvent
and
dry
it
thorou
ghly.
Check
the
pan
f
or
cracks,
holes,
damaged
drain
plug
thr
eads, a loose baffle,
or
warped
gas
ket
s
urf
ace.
R
epai
r
any
damage,
or
replace
the
pan
if
repa
irs
cannot
be
made.
h. Oil Filter.
The
full flow
-ty
pe
oil filter,
used
on
all
e
ngin
es,
filters
the
en
tire
output
of
the
pump
befor
e
the
oil
enters
the
engi
ne
lubri
ca
tion
system.
A
built
in
by-pass
provides
oil
to
th
e
system
in
case
the
filter
element
becomes
clogged
.
Th
e
by-pass
is
loc
ate
d in
the
holl
ow
center
bolt
and
consi
s
ts
of a
spri
ng
loaded
valve.
Wh
en
the
element
is cl
ean
and
oil will
fl
ow
through
it
,
the
pressure
difference
be-
tween
the
inn
er
and
outer
faces
of
the
valve
is
not
great
enough
to
overcome
the
spring
pressure
behind
the
valve.
When
the
element
is
dirty
and
will
not
permit
a sufficient flow
of
oil,
the
pressure
on
the
inner
face
of
the
valve
drops,
and
the
pressure
differ-
ence
between
th
e
valve
f
aces
is
enough
to
cause
the
valve
to
open.
Oil
then
by-passes
the
e
lement,
thereby
maintaining
a s
upply
of
oil
to
the
engine
lubri
catio
n
system.

filter

the
bottom
of
the
ve
hicle
.

remove

bolt
and
fibre
gasket
from

e
cover.

sh all
parts
in
a
solvent
and
dry
them
thoroughly.

clean.

ASSEMBLY.
In

gasket
on
the
ce
nt
er
bolt,
then
place
the
bolt
through
the
filter hous-
ing
.

ll
the
spri
ng a
nd
spri
ng
seat
assembly
on
the
bolt
,
making

ur
e
the
seat
tangs
are
engaged
in
th
e
spri
ng.
In
sta
ll a n
ew
neopr
ene
gasket
and
a
new
filter
element
over
th
e
ce
nt
er bolt.

INSTALLATION.
Be
s
ur
e
the
two
elongated
holes
in
the
o
il
filt
er
diaphragm
are
at
the
top
,
when
positioned
on
the
block,
as
s
hown
in
fig. 43.

Place
the
filter
assembly
in
position,
and
thread
the
ce
nter
bolt
int
o
the

dapt
er,
finger-tight.
Rot

the
filter as-

direction,

the
gasket
is
seated
e
venly.
Tighten
the
center
bolt
to
20-25 f
oot-po
und

torque.
