assembly with the tool shown in fig. 41. This tool is
not required on the 239 or 256 cubic inch engi ne. In-
stall the two screws that retain the cap to the cylinder
block.
NOTE : Check th e retain er to cylinder blo ck seal
Jor l ea ks. S quirt a j ew drops of oil into th e co rn e rs
of th e sea ls on the inside of th e cylinder block. Blow
compressed air into th e se al co rn ers from th e in-
side of lhe block. If oil seeps past I.he seal, r emove
the seal re tain er. Be sure all mating surfaces are
clean. In s tall new seals and repe at th e air t esL .
8. OIL PAN, OIL FILTER, AND OIL PUMP AND PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE
The inspection and repair procedur es applicable to
the above components are presented below . In addi-
tion, the r emova l, disassembly, assembly, and in sta lla -
tion
procedures for the oil filter are given, inasm u ch as
these procedures are ap plicable to all engines.
a. Oil Pan.
R emove the oil pan. Scr ape a ny dirt or metal part-
icles fr om the in side of th e pan. Sc rape all o ld gasket
mat erial from the gas ket s urface. W as h the pan in a
solvent and dry it thorou ghly.
Check the pan f or cracks, holes, damaged drain plug
thr eads, a loose baffle, or warped gas ket s urf ace.

epai r any damage, or replace the pan if repa irs
cannot be made.
h. Oil Filter.
The full flow -ty pe oil filter, used on all e ngin es,
filters
the en tire output of the pump befor e the oil
enters the engi ne lubri ca tion system.
A built in by-pass provides oil to th e system in case
the filter element becomes clogged . Th e by-pass is
loc
ate d in the holl ow center bolt and consi s ts of a
spri
ng loaded valve. Wh en the element is cl ean and
oil will fl ow through it , the pressure difference be-
tween the inn er and outer faces of the valve is not
great enough to overcome the spring pressure behind
the valve. When the element is dirty and will not
permit a sufficient flow of oil, the pressure on the
inner face of the valve drops, and the pressure differ-
ence
between th e valve f aces is enough to cause the
valve to open. Oil then by-passes the e lement, thereby
maintaining a s upply of oil to the engine lubri catio n
system.
(1) REMOVAL. Remo ve the filter from the bottom
of the ve hicle . Pl ace a pan on the floor dire c tly under

the filter. Remove the filter cen ter bolt, then remove
th e filter assemb ly and gasket.
(2) DISASSEMBLY . R e move the filter element,
neoprene gas ket, spri ng , and seat, then remove the
ce nt er bolt and fibre gasket from th e cover. Dis car d
the filter el eme nt and all gaskets. Th e oil filter is shown
di sasse mbled in fig. 42.
(3) C LEANING. Wa sh all parts in a solvent and
dry them thoroughly. M ak e s ur e all the ope ning s in
the center bolt are clean.
( 4) ASSEMBLY. In sta ll a n ew fibre gasket on the
ce nt er bolt, then place the bolt through the filter hous-
ing . In sta ll the spri ng a nd spri ng seat assembly on
the bolt , making s ur e the seat tangs are engaged
in th e spri ng. In sta ll a n ew neopr ene gasket and a
new filter element over th e ce nt er bolt.
(5) INSTALLATION. Be s ur e the two elongated
holes in the o il filt er diaphragm are at the top , when
positioned on the block, as s hown in fig. 43. In sta ll a
n
ew n eopre ne gasket in the filter hou sing recess. Place
the filter assembly in position, and thread the ce nter
bolt int o the a dapt er, finger-tight. Rot ate the filter as-
semb ly s li ght ly , in eac h direction, to mak e s ure the
gasket is seated e venly. Tighten the center bolt to
20-25 f oot-po und s torque.
