Meats,fishand poultrypurchased
fromthe storevary inqualityand
age, consequently,safestorage
time inyourrefrigeratorwill vary.
Tostoreunfrozenmeats,fishand
poultry:
. Alwaysremove storewrappings.
. Rewrapinfoil, film or wax paper
andrefrigerateimmediately.
Tostorecheese,wrapwell withwax
paperoraluminumfoil, or put ina
plasticbag.
. Carefullywrapto expel air and
helpprevent mold.
Store prepackaged cheese in its
ownwrappingifyou wish.
Tostorevegetables,usethe
vegetabledrawers—they’vebeen
designedto preservethe natural
moistureandfreshnessof produce.
. Crispnesscan be maintainedby
coveringvegetableswith a moist
towel.
Asa furtheraid to freshness,
prepackaged vegetablescan be
storedintheir originalwrapping.
Note: Special fresh food com-
partment drawers (on models so
equipped) make it unnecessary
to wrap certain foods which they’ve
been designed to preserve. These
drawers are described on pages
10andll.
Tostoreice cream- Fin+quality
ice cream,with highcream
content,will normallyrequire
slightlylowertemperaturesthan
more “airy”already-packaged
brandswith lowcreamcontent.
. Itwill be necessaryto experiment
to determinethe freezer compart-
mentlocationandtemperaturecon-
trolsettingto keepyour ice cream
at the rightservingtemperature.
The rearofthe freezercompart-
mentisslightlycolderthanthe front.
Tips
on freezing foods
There are three essentialrequire
mentsfor efficient homefreezing.
1. Initialquality.Freeze only
top-qualityfoods.Freezing retains
qualiw andfiavoc itcannotimprove
quality.
2. Speed. The quickerfruits and
vegetablesare frozenafter picking,
the betterthe frozenproductwill
be. You’llsave time, too, because
less cullingandsortingwill be
necessary.
3. Properpackaging.Use food
wrapsdesignedespeciallyfor
freezing.

Tofreeze meat,fishand poultry,
wrapwell infreezer-weightfoil(or
otherheavy-dutywrappingmaterial)
formingitcarefullyto the shapeof
the contents.This expels air.Fold
andcrimpendsof the packageto
providea good, lastingseal.
Don’trefreeze meatthat hascom-
pletelythawed;meat,whetherraw
or cooked,can be frozensuccess-
fully onlyonce.

Store all likethingstogether.This

formostfrequentlyusedsaucesand
condiments.
. Usethe meat drawerfor meats
you do notfreeze.
Tosave money in energy

Place most perishable items such
asmilk, creamor cottagecheese
towardthe rear ofthe top shelfas
they will staycoldestinthis part
of the freshfood compartment.
. Cover moistfoodswith tightlids,
plasticfilm or foil.
. Leafvegetablesand fruitsplaced
in storagedrawerswill lastlonger
when storedin closedplasticcon-
tainersorwrapped in plasticfilm.
Do notoverloadyourfreshfood
or freezer compartmentwitha lot
of warmfood at once.
. Open the doorthe fewesttimes
possibleto saveelectricalenergy.
. Whengoingoutoftownforseveral
days,leaveasfew perishablesas
possibleinthe refrigerator.Setthe
icemakerto the “OFF”positionand
shutoffwatertothe refrigerator.
