Common Features
A simple explanation of the IP rating system is written
below. Please refer to more specialized information
material if you wish to know more.
An IP number contains two numbers (i.e. IP65) in most
instances which relate to the level of protection provided
by an enclosure or housing. Either number may be
shown as “X”
(i.e. IPX6 / IP7X) to indicate the “X”
part is
not tested.
The first number relates to protection from solids as
follows:
0: No special protection
1: Protected against solid objects up to 50 mm in
diameter
2: Protected against solid objects up to 12 mm in
diameter
3: Protected against solid objects up to 2.5 mm in
diameter
4: Protected against solid objects up to 1 mm in
diameter
5: Dust protected
6: Dust tight
The second number relates to protection from liquids as
follows:
0: No special protection
1: Protected against vertically falling drops of water
2: Protected against direct sprays up to 15
o
from the
vertical
3: Protected against direct sprays up to 60
o
from the
vertical
4: Protected against sprays from all directions (limited
ingress permitted)
5: Protected against low pressure jets of water from all
directions (limited ingress permitted)
6: Protected against strong jets of water e.g. for use on
ship decks (limited ingress permitted)
7: Protected against the effects of temporary immersion
between 15cm and 1m for 30min.
8: Protected against long periods of immersion under
pressure
(Water-level and submersion time set by
manufacturer)
