X
When loading or unloading the vehicle,
lower the leading/trailing axle.
X
To raise/lower: press the â button.
When
the leading/trailing axle is raised, the
¡ (trailing axle) or } (leading axle)
indicator lamp lights up yellow in the status
area of the on-board computer.
Steerable additional axle
!
When manoeuvring close to kerbstones
or when travelling through narrow pas-
sages, there is a risk of tyre damage. In
such
cases, centre the steering of the trail-
ing axle.
The additional axle is an electro-hydraulically
steered trailing axle which steers in accord-
ance with the angle of the steering wheel
when driving forwards and reversing. It
reduces
both tyre wear and the vehicle's turn-
ing circle. The steering angle of the additional
axle decreases with increasing speed and
increases with decreasing speed. When the
vehicle is stationary, the trailing axle steers
actively.
In extreme driving conditions, e.g. when brak-
ing hard on a slippery or uneven road surface,
the steerable trailing axle may deactivate
itself. It will then only steer passively.
If the steerable trailing axle is malfunctioning
or no longer actively steering, the yellow
event window shows the D (Y page 180)
symbol in the on-board computer.
X
Switch the ignition lock to the drive posi-
tion.
X
To centre manually: press the upper sec-
tion of the Õ button.
The steering of the trailing axle is centred.
The wheels on the trailing axle move to the
straight-ahead position. When the Õ
indicator lamp lights up in the status area of
the on-board computer, the trailing axle is
centred.
X
To activate:
press the upper section of the
Õ button again.
The trailing axle is activated. When the
Õ indicator lamp goes out in the status
area of the on-board computer, the trailing
axle is activated. The trailing axle again
steers actively.
When the { indicator lamp lights up grey
in the status area of the on-board computer,
the difference in steering angle between the
fully
locked front axle wheels and the steera-
ble trailing axle is too great. The vehicle was
parked with the steering at full lock, for exam-
ple. The steerable trailing axle will not steer
actively.
X
Turn the multifunction steering wheel to
the left and the right as far as it will go.
The steerable trailing axle is picked up by
turning
the steering wheel. The trailing axle
again steers actively. The { indicator
lamp in the status area of the on-board
computer goes out.
or
X
Pull away slowly.
The trailing axle again steers actively. The
{ indicator lamp in the status area of
the on-board computer goes out.
Information on raising and lowering a height-
adjustable trailing axle can be found in the
"Leading/trailing axles" section
