ABScannotovercomethephysical
limitationsofstoppingthecarintooshort
adistance,corneringattoohighaspeed,or
thedangerofaquaplaning,i.e.wherealayer
ofwaterpreventsadequatecontactbetween
thetyresandtheroadsurface.
Thepurposeoftheanti-lockbrakingsystem(ABS)isto
preventthewheelsfromlockingwhilebraking,thereby
enablingthedrivertoretainsteeringcontrolofthecar.
ThefactthatacaristtedwithABSmustnevertempt
thedriverintotakingrisksthatcouldaffecthis/hersafety
orthatofotherroadusers.Inallcases,itremains
thedriver'sresponsibilitytodrivewithinnormalsafety
margins,havingdueconsiderationforprevailingweather
andtrafcconditions.
Undernormalbrakingconditions,ABSwillnotbe
activated.However,oncethebrakingforceexceedsthe
availableadhesionbetweenthetiresandtheroadsurface,
therebycausingthewheelstolock,ABSwillautomatically
comeintooperation.Thiswillberecognisablebyarapid
pulsationfeltthroughthebrakepedal.
