21.1 Trimmer / Brushcutter
21 Troubleshooting Guide
Many performance issues can be resolved with a few simple steps. When troubleshooting, STIHL recommends that you start
with the following measures:
► Replace the air filter, @ 21.2.
► Clean or replace the spark plug, @ 21.3.
► As appropriate for conditions, set the trimmer's "shutter" for winter or summer operation, @ 15.3 or @ 15.4.
► If these measures do not resolve the issue, continue to the steps described below.
Always shut off the engine before carrying out any inspection, cleaning or maintenance.
Condition Possible Cause Remedy
The engine does not start. There is insufficient fuel in the fuel tank. ► Refuel the trimmer / brushcutter, @ 10.2.
The carburetor is too hot. ► Cool down the trimmer / brushcutter.
► Before starting the engine. Press the manual
fuel pump bulb at least ten times – even if the
bulb is filled with fuel.
The carburetor is iced up. ► Allow the engine to warm up gradually to a
temperature of about 50 °F (10 °C).
The engine idles
erratically.
The carburetor is iced up. ► Allow the engine to warm up gradually to a
temperature of about 50 °F (10 °C).
The engine stops while
idling.
The carburetor is iced up. ► Allow the engine to warm up gradually to a
temperature of about 50 °F (10 °C).
The engine does not reach
maximum speed.
The throttle cable is not set correctly. ► Adjusting the throttle cable, @ 21.4.
The trimmer / brushcutter is not properly
calibrated to the ambient conditions.
► Calibrate the trimmer / brushcutter, @ 15.2.
The fuel tank is not
completely emptied.
The pick-up body / filter inside the fuel tank is
not in place.
► Have the pick-up body / filter checked by an
authorized STIHL servicing dealer.
