Check Engine Oil
Checkoil levelbeforeeachoperation.Besureoil levelismaintained.
1. Checkthe oil withthe enginestoppedand level.
2. Removetheoil filldipstickandwipeit clean.
3. Insertandtightendipstick.Removeittocheckthe oillevel.
4. Ifthe oil levelisnearor belowthe lowerlimitmarkonthedipstick,
removetheoil fillercap/dipstick,andfill withthe recommendedoil
totheupperlimitmark.Do not overfill.
5. Reinstallthe oilfill dipstick.
Change Engine Oil
Gasolineand itsvaporsareextremelyflammableandexplosive.
Fireor explosioncancausesevereburnsor death.
Changeengineoil afterthefirstfivehoursof operation,andeveryfifty
hoursoronce a seasonthereafter.
lWhen draintheoil fromthe oil fill thefueltankmustbe
you top
tube,
emptyor fuel canleakoutand resultinafire or explosion.Toempty
thefueltank,runtheengineuntilitstopsfromlackof fuel.
1. Withengineoffbutstillwarm,disconnectthesparkplugwireandkeep
itawayfromthe sparkplug.
2. Placea suitablecontainernextto the engineto catchtheusedoil.
3. Removetheoil filldipstickanddraintheoil intothecontainerby
tippingtheenginetowardtheoil fillerneck.See Figure13.
Usedoilisa hazardouswasteproduct.Disposeof usedoil properly.
IDonotdiscardwithhouseholdwaste.Checkwithyourlocalauthori-
_tiesor SearsServiceCenterfor safedisposal/recyclingfacilities.
4. Withthe engineina levelposition,filltothe upperlimitmarkon the
dipstickwiththerecommendedoil.
Runningtheenginewitha lowoil levelcan causeenginedamage.
5. Reinstallthe oilfill dipsticksecurely.
Clean Engine
• Dailyor beforeeveryuse,cleangrass,chaffor accumulated
debrisfromengine.Keeplinkage,spring,andcontrolsclean.
Keepareaaroundandbehindmufflerfreeofanycombustible
debris.
• Keepingenginecleanallowsairmovementaroundengine.
• Enginepartsshouldbe keptcleanto reducetheriskofoverheat-
ingandignitionof accumulateddebris.
Donotusewaterto cleanengineparts.Watercouldcontaminatefuel
system.Usea brushor dry cloth.

LUBRICATION
Blade Control
Lubricatepivotpointsonthebladecontrolat leastoncea seasonwith
lightoil.Thiscontrolmustoperatefreelyinbothdirections.SeeFigure

Wheels
Lubricatethewheelsat leastoncea seasonwithlightoil (ormotoroil).
Ifwheelsare removedforanyreason,lubricatesurfaceof thepivot
armandinnersurfaceofthewheelwithlightoil.SeeFigure14.
Side Discharge Cover
Lubricatethetorsionspringsandpivotpointsonthesidedischarge
coverperiodicallywith lightoilto preventrust. SeeFigure14.
