Assembly
1. Use a ywheel strap wrench or holding tool (see
Tools and Aids) to hold ywheel and loosen screw
securing ywheel to crankshaft.
2. Remove screw and washer.
3. Use a puller to remove ywheel from crankshaft.
4. Remove woodruff key from crankshaft.
Inspection
Inspect ywheel for cracks and ywheel keyway for
damage. Replace ywheel if it is cracked. Replace
ywheel, crankshaft, and key if ywheel key is sheared
or keyway is damaged.
Inspect ring gear for cracks or damage. Kohler does not
provide ring gear as a serviceable part. Replace ywheel
if ring gear is damaged.
Remove Ignition Modules
1. Disconnect lead(s) from each ignition module.
Modules for non-SMART-SPARK
™
ignition systems
have only one kill lead.
2. Rotate ywheel so magnet is away from modules.
3. Remove mounting screws and ignition modules.
Note position of ignition modules.
Remove Debris Screen and Fan
1. Small metal retainers are typically attached on 3 of 7
mounting posts for positive retention of plastic debris
screen. Use a hook-end tool next to post and pull
outward to separate small metal retainers. Then
unsnap fan from remaining mounting posts.
2. Remove screws and fan.
Remove Flywheel
NOTE: Always use a ywheel strap wrench or holding
tool to hold ywheel when loosening or
tightening ywheel screw. Do not use any type
of bar or wedge to hold ywheel. Use of such
tools could cause ywheel to become cracked or
damaged.
NOTE: Always use a ywheel puller to remove ywheel
from crankshaft. Do not strike crankshaft or
ywheel, as these parts could become cracked
or damaged. Striking puller or crankshaft can
cause crank gear to move, affecting crankshaft
end play.
