Donotopenthestatic-protectivepackagecontainingthenewpartuntilthedefectiveparthasbeenremoved
andyouarereadytoinstallthenewpart.Staticelectricity,althoughharmlesstoyou,canseriouslydamage
computercomponentsandparts.
Whenyouhandlepartsandothercomputercomponents,taketheseprecautionstoavoidstatic-electricity
damage:
•Limityourmovement.Movementcancausestaticelectricitytobuilduparoundyou.
•Alwayshandlepartsandothercomputercomponentscarefully.HandlePCI/PCI-Expresscards,memory
modules,systemboards,andmicroprocessorsbytheedges.Nevertouchanyexposedcircuitry.
•Preventothersfromtouchingthepartsandothercomputercomponents.
•Touchthestatic-protectivepackagecontainingtheparttoametalexpansion-slotcoverorother
unpaintedmetalsurfaceonthecomputerforatleasttwoseconds.Thisreducesstaticelectricityfrom
thepackageandyourbodybeforeyouinstallorreplaceanewpart.
•Whenpossible,removethenewpartfromthestatic-protectivepackage,andinstallitdirectlyinthe
computerwithoutsettingthepartdown.Whenthisisnotpossible,placethestatic-protectivepackage
thatthepartcameinonasmooth,levelsurfaceandplacethepartonthepackage.
•Donotplacethepartonthecomputercoverorothermetalsurface.
