15 Shutting Off the Engine
To start the engine:
Depress the decompression valve (1).
Engage the chain brake, @ 12.1.
Remove the chain scabbard.
The Master Control Lever (3) will automatically be in run
position if the engine is shut off.
Hold the chain saw firmly and pull the starter grip slowly
with your right hand until you feel it engage.
If the engine has not yet been started, or if it shut off when
it was accelerated the first time or shut off because the
fuel tank ran dry, use the following cold starting
procedure: depress and hold the throttle trigger lockout (5)
and squeeze the throttle trigger (4) while moving the
Master Control Lever (3) to start position .
Pull the starter grip quickly and allow the starter rope to
rewind several times until the engine runs.
Do not pull out the starter rope to full length and do not let
the starter grip snap back. Guide it slowly back into the
housing so that the starter rope can rewind properly.

Pull the starter grip quickly and allow the starter rope to
rewind several times until the engine runs.
If the Master Control Lever was set to position , press
down the throttle trigger lockout (5) and blip the throttle
trigger (4). The Master Control Lever will move to the run
position and the engine will settle down to idle speed.

Your chain saw is ready for operation.
If the saw chain rotates when the engine is idling, shut off
the engine, engage the chain brake and have the chain
saw inspected by an authorized STIHL servicing dealer
before further use.
NOTICE
Accelerating the engine while the chain brake is engaged or
the chain is otherwise blocked (i.e., not able to turn)
increases the load and will cause the clutch to slip
continuously. This may occur if the throttle is depressed for
more than a few seconds when the chain is pinched in the
cut or the chain brake is engaged. To reduce the risk of
overheating and damage to important components (e. g.
clutch, polymer housing components), always disengage the
chain brake before accelerating engine and before starting
cutting work. The only exception to this rule is when you
check operation of the chain brake, @ 16.1.

WARNING
The saw chain will continue to rotate for a short while after
the throttle trigger is released. To avoid serious or fatal
injury, avoid contact with the moving chain. To reduce the
risk of personal injury from unintended activation or
