21 Cleaning
21.1 Cleaning the Chain Saw
WARNING
To reduce the risk of personal injury from unintended
activation, shut off the engine and engage the chain brake
before carrying out any cleaning work, @ 8. Users of this
chain saw should carry out only the cleaning described in
this manual.
To clean the chain saw:
Shut off the engine, @ 15.
Engage the chain brake, @ 12.1.
Clean the chain saw's polymer components with a slightly
dampened cloth. Do not use detergents or solvents. They
may damage the polymer components.
Remove the shroud and clean the cylinder fins.
Remove the sprocket cover and clean the area around the
chain sprocket with a slightly dampened cloth or resin
solvent, such as STIHL Resin Remover & Lubricant.
Do not use a pressure washer to clean the chain saw or
otherwise spray it with water or other liquids.
21.2 Cleaning the Guide Bar and Saw Chain
WARNING
To reduce the risk of personal injury from unintended
activation, shut off the engine and engage the chain brake
before carrying out any cleaning work, @ 8. Users of this
chain saw should carry out only the cleaning described in
this manual.To help prevent injuries, always wear heavy-
duty work gloves when handling the chain.
To properly clean the guide bar and chain:
Shut off the engine, @ 15.
Engage the chain brake, @ 12.1.
Remove the guide bar and the chain, @ 10.2.2.
Clean the oil outlet duct (1), oil inlet bore (2) and groove
(3) with a brush, a slightly dampened cloth or resin
solvent, such as STIHL Resin Remover & Lubricant. Do
not use detergents.
Clean the chain with a brush, a slightly dampened cloth or
resin solvent. Do not use detergents.
Do not use a pressure washer to clean the guide bar or
chain or otherwise spray them with water or other liquids.
21.3 Cleaning the Air Filter
Very fine dust can collect in the air filter and block proper air
flow. This dust cannot be removed by simply brushing the air
filter or knocking it out. The air filter must be cleaned with the
STIHL special cleaner or another cleaning agent with a
pH value higher than 12.
To clean the air filter:
Shut off the engine, @ 15.1.
Engage the chain brake, @ 12.1.
