SYMPTOM:
Low compressor oil level.
POSSIBLE CAUSE POSSIBLE REMEDY
Oil separator not returning oil. Check oil separator float and oil return stop
valve (70) and line for a restriction. The oil
return line should be above ambient temperature
most of the time as it returns oil. It may be
cooler at the start of a freeze cycle. Repair or
replace defective parts.
Repeated short cycling (refrigerant carrying
oil out of compressor).
Usually caused by freeze-up, low refrigerant
charge, low head pressure, faulty timer, faulty
pressure switch or expansion valve clogged. Use
process of elimination.
Worn piston rings. This condition is hard to detect without
dismantling the compressor and checking piston
ring tolerances. Normally there will be a little
puddle of oil laying on top of the piston when
the head and valve plate are removed. It is best
to replace the compressor.
