9.2 Locking the rotor
CAUTION
A locked rotor must be removed after the turbocharger repair and
checked for unbalance.
NOTICE
An exception is a test rig run up to maximum 25% engine load on new
engines with one or several turbochargers, which is sometimes reques-
ted by customers. As operation with a locked rotor is only brief in these
cases and the loads are low, subsequent removal of the rotor is not ne-
cessary.
Removed balancing screws may not be screwed in again.
NOTICE
Various intermediate rings are provided with the locking device for dif-
ferent compressor wheels. Attention must be paid to the compressor
wheel type ”CV” (for the balancing screw holes). The distance between
the locking flange (94003) and the assembly-disassembly device
(90020) must be compensated using the intermediate rings (94001
and/or 94002) depending on the compressor wheel version.
CAUTION
During operation of the engine with a locked turbocharger, the lubricat-
ing oil system must also remain connected to this turbocharger and
turned on if the gas inlet cannot be throttled. (See section Further
measures and information for operation with a locked rotor for 4-
stroke engines.) Otherwise components that are still intact can be
damaged through overheating.
Shut off the oil supply in the event of lubricating oil leaking from the
turbocharger.
