Child safety
Important considerations
Do not leave children unattended in the
vehicle, as they could otherwise endan-
ger themselves and/or other persons by open-
ing the doors, for example.<
In general, the front passenger's seat and rear
outer passenger seats are suitable for the
installation of universal child restraint systems
for all age groups, provided these have been
approved for the age group in question.
Always carry children at the rear
Children under 12 years of age or smaller
than 150 cm (approx. 5 feet) should
always travel on the rear outer seats using suit-
able child restraint systems, otherwise there is a
greater risk of injury in the event of an acci-
dent.<
Exception for the front passenger's
seat
If you nevertheless need to fit a child
restraint system on the front passenger's
seat, the front passenger's airbags must be
deactivated, otherwise a child travelling on that
seat will be at considerable risk of injury if the
airbags are triggered off, even if it is wearing a
child restraint system. BMW Service will be glad
to advise you on this.<
The airbags for the front passenger can-
not be deactivated unless the car is fitted
with a keyswitch for the front passenger's air-
bags.<
Seat height
Before fitting a universal child restraint system
to the front passenger seat, move the seat up as
far as it will go in order to achieve optimal place-
ment of the seat belt. Do not change the height
of the seat after fitting the child restraint sys-
tem.
Keyswitch* for front
passenger airbags
You can deactivate and subsequently reactivate
the front and side airbags for the front passen-
ger by means of a keyswitch. This keyswitch is
set in the side of the dashboard on the passen-
ger side.
You can deactivate and reactivate the airbags
for the front passenger only when the car is at a
standstill and the front passenger's door is
open.
Deactivating
1. Remove the integrated key from the remote
control, see page 16.
2. Use the integrated key or spare key to turn
the keyswitch to the OFF position.
The airbags for the front passenger are deacti-
vated when the switch is in this position. The
airbags for the driver remain fully active.
Once the child restraint system has been
removed, immediately reactivate the air-
bags for the front passenger so that they can
deploy correctly in the event of an accident.<
Reactivating
Use the integrated key or spare key to turn the
keyswitch to the ON position.
The front passenger's airbags are reactivated
and can deploy correctly if the need arises.
