Appendix A: GlassChem 20 Vessels
New Cap and Vent Plug Conditioning
All new vessel tops and vent plugs should be conditioned as a set prior to being put into service. The break-in
procedure is used to condition the Teon® to ensure a proper seal.
WARNING
Proper precautions must be taken to avoid contact with solvents or solvent vapors. Protective gear should
be worn as outlined in the user’s safety program for hazardous materials and the solvent manufacturer’s
safety data sheet. Refer to these guidelines for proper handling and disposal of the solvents.
1. Place a Teon coated stir bar and 10 mL of tap water into each of the vessels. The minimum cavity load for
water is 50mL so more than one vessel is required.
2. Assemble and torque each vessel. See “Vessel Assembly” for detailed instructions.
3. Create a Classic Method with the following parameters.
• Control Type = Ramp to Temp, Vessel Type = Glass Chem, TempGuard™ = On 200, Ramp Time = 5 minutes,
Hold Time = 5 minutes, Temperature = 150 °C, Power = see “Operating Parameters”, Stir = On.
4. Place vessels in turntable and insert the turntable into the cavity. See “Turntable Setup” for detailed instruc-
tions.
5. Close the instrument door and run the preprogrammed method. Verify that vessel count, type and position are
correct.
6. After completion of the method, permit the vessels to cool to 70 °C. While still warm, loosen the tops and
reseal using preset torque tool.
WARNING
To prevent the possibility of severe burns, ensure that gloves and protective gear as outlined in your safety
program are worn.
7. Press start to re-run the method that was programmed in step 3. If the vessels leak during the second heating
to 150 °C, repeat the procedure in step 6.
8. Remove the vessel assemblies from the turntable. See “Vessel Removal” for detailed instructions.
9. Rinse the vessels and caps with deionized water.
10. Once the vessel tops have been broken-in, the vessels are ready for regular use.
