CAUTION:
Do
not
hit
Ihe
flywheel
when
removing
the
ring
gear.
Heat
the
new
ring
gear
evenly
until
the
gear
expands
enough
to
slip
onto
the
flywheel.
Make
sure
the
gear
is
seated
properly
against
the
shoulder.
CAUTION:
Do
not
heat
any
portion
of
the
gear
10
a
temperature
higher
than
500·
F.
If

Crankshaft
.
Check
the
end
play
for
co
nform
ance
to specification
in the following manner:
Push
the
crankshaft
toward
the
rear
of.
the
engine
.
Place
a dial indicator
point
against
the
rear or front
end
of
the
crankshaft
flange. S
et
the
dial
on
zero
then
push
the
crankshaft
forward.
Compare
th
e
reading
on
the
dial indicator with specifications.

CLEANING
AND
INSPECTION

emove
the
crankshaft, wash it in a solvent) and
blowout
the oil
passages with
compressed
air.
Examine
the
shaft for
damage.
Measure
the
diameter
of
each journal in at least four
places
to
dete
rmine
out
-of-roundness, taper, or under-
size
condition
(fig.
32).

REPAIRS.
If
the
end
play
is excessive,
replace
the
thrust
bearing.
Replace
the
crankshaft
if
it
shows signs
of
failure.
Dress
minor nicks or scratches.
If
the
pins
or
journals
are
o
ut·
of
·round
beyond
further
use,
the
shaft
should
be
gro
und
for
the
n
ext
undersize
bearing.
Calculate
the
correct undersize bearing
to
be
used
as fol1ows :
EXAMPLE:
If
the
main
bearing
journal
will
" clean;
up"
before
it

finish it to
that
diame

er,
and
install
