CLEANING AND INSPECTION.
Remo
ve
the
carbon deposits from
the
piston. Clean the piston ring
grooves
with
a
ring
groove
clea
ner
(fig.
43).
Make
sure
the
oil
ring
slots
(or
holes)
are
clean.
CAUTION:
Do
not
use
a
caustic
cleaning
solution
or
a
wire
brush.
Inspect
pistons
f
or
fr
actures
at
the
ring
lands, skirt,
and
pin
bosses,
and
for scuffed
or
scored
skirts. Spongy,
eroded areas
ne
ar
the
edge
of
the
piston
top
are usually
caused
by detonation, or pre-ignition. A shi
ny
surface
on
the
" thrust surface
of
the piston, offset from
the
center-
line
between
the
piston pin holes, can
be be
caused
by
