1 - Turnoffall electricalpowertothe boiler.Disconnectoilburnerwiringharness.
2a- If cleaningfrom theside,removeleft jacketpaneland sidecleanoutcoverplates.
2b- If cleaningfrom thetop, removefluepipe,lefftopjacketpane_andfluecollector.
3 - Brushthe fluepassageswitha wire brushto removeall scaleor soot.
4 - Removescale andsootfromcombustionchamberby vacuumcleaningor anyother means.
NOTE:BURNERMOUNTINGPLATEMUST BEREMOVEDOR SWUNGOPENTO FACILITATETHISOPERATION.TARGETWALLIS MADEOF
SOFTCERAMICFIBER.DO NOTDAMAGETHIS MATERIALDURINGBRUSHINGANDVACUUMCLEANING.
5 - Installclean-outcover platesor flue collector.Inspectclean-outcover plate insulation,flue collectorgasket, or rope seal Replaceany piecesnot
forminga gastightseal.
6 - Installjacketpanelsandfluepipeas required.
J - CLEANINGTHESERIESECSTEAMBOILERWITH SKIMTAPPING
Thefollowingcleaning procedureshaftbe performedbya qualifiedserviceperson.Referto Figure9 for locationof skimtapping.
1 - Cleanthe boileras describedbelownolaterthan one weekafterthe initialstart up.Cleaningwill bemoreeffectiveifthe boileroperatesadayor
two to loosensedimentand impuritiesin thesystem.
2 -The boilermust becleanedto removeanyaccumulationof oil, grease,sludge,etc.that maybe inthe system.Thesesubstancescancause
foamingand surgingof the boilerwater,producingan unstablewaterline andwatercarryovertothe system.
WARNING:CLEANINGTHEBOILERREQUIRESTHEUSEOFVERYHOTWATERAND CORROSIVECHEMICALS.USECAREWHEN
HANDLINGTO PREVENTINJURY,
3 - Connecta 11/2"pipe nippleand shutoffvalveto skimtapping.
4 - Connecta 11/2"drainline offof the skimvalve,run to a pointof safedischarge.
5 - Close allvalvesto thesystem.Providea meansof continuousfreshwaterto the boilerfor thecleaningprocess.
6 - Open the skimvalve.Fiflthe boileruntilwater beginsto flowout ofthe valve.Shutofffill valve.
7 - Usecommonwashingsoda(suchas Armand HammerSuperWashingSoda).Mix thesodawithwater in a 10quart pailandpourintotheboiler
throughthesafetyvalvetapping.Mix a proportionof one (1)poundof washingsodaforeach800 squarefeetEDRnetboiterrating.
CAUTION:DONOTLEAVETHEBOILERUNATTENDEDWHILEFIRING.TAKEGREATCARENOTTOALLOWTHEWATERLEVELTODROP
BELOWTHE BOTTOMOFTHEGAUGEGLASSORTOALLOWFRESHWATERMAKEUPTOFLOWINTOO FAST.THISWILL
AVOIDTHEPOSSIBILITYOFCAUSINGTHE BOILERSECTIONSTOFRACTURE.
8 -Turn burneronand allowtheboilerwater to heat uptojust belowsteaming(180to200 degreesF).Cycletheburnerto maintaintemperature
duringskimming.Do notallowthe boilerto steam.Steamingmixesupthecontaminantsinthe waterinsteadof floatingthemat the surface.
9 - Openthe make-upwater valvetocontinuouslyfeed waterto the boiler.Allowwatertoflow outof theskimtapping.
10- Continueskimmingtheboileruntilthewater flowingfromtheskim tappingflowsclear.Thiswill takesometime,possiblyseveralhoursfor a dirty
system.
11- Afterskimmingiscomplete,closetheskim valveandturn offthe boiler.
12- Close themake-upwatervalveand openthe boilerdrain valve.
13- Drainthe boilercompletely.Refilland drainagainone or twotimesto makesure allofthe sodahasbeen washedout.
14- Restorepipingtonormal.Pipea nippleandcap inthe skimvalve.
15- NOTE:If thegaugeglassbecomesdirtyagain,this indicatesmorecontaminantshaveworkedlooseinthe system.Repeatthecleaningand
skimmingprocessas neededto cleanthe system.
