STEERING
Fig. 8 Steering System Description
The steering system is comprised of:
• Steering wheel
• Steering column
• Rack and pinion steering gear with integral tie
rods
• Tie rod ends
• Steering knuckle
• Ball joints
OPERATION
The steering column transmits rotation of the
steering wheel to the pinion in the steering gear.
Rotation of the pinion moves the gear rack in the
steering gear from side to side. This lateral action
of the rack pushes and pulls the tie rods that are
attached to the steering knuckles. Steering
knuckles pivot on ball joints that are mounted on
the control arms. Wheel and brake assemblies are
mounted to the steering knuckles. The pivoting
action of the knuckles change the direction of the
front wheels.
