I
A rubber buffer shock absorber
is
incorporated in the clutch hub from the engine
number
32303.
All models previous to this number have a spring loaded cam type
shock absorber on the engine mainshaft. To remove the engine sprocket nut
engage top gear and use a well fitting box spanner. The tommy-bar should be
struck several sharp blows with
a
suitable hammer or mallet when
it
will be found
I
to unscrew quite easily.
4
The order of assembly
is
as follows: Sleeve, engine sprocket, slider, spring, collar
and nut. The nut should be screwed home with the box spanner in the same
manner as when unscrewing, finishing with several sharp hammer blows to lock the
I
nut up tight.
The frame with swinging arm suspension was
first
fitted to the Tiger models in
1954,
and extended to the rest of the range in 1955. In addition to the other changes
this frame also employs a different method of gearbox mounting, but the actual
shafts and gears are identical. A stronger crankshaft and larger timing side main
bearing were fitted to all models except rhe Speed Twin for 1954 and extended
to the Speed Twin for 1955. The Amal Monobloc carburetter was introduced
i
during the 1955 season and is now fitted to ail models except the Thunderbird.
1:
The 1955 ST and 6T swinging arm models d~Her from the earlier A.C. equipped
models, in that the alternator stator
is
mounted on the inner half of the chaincase.
i
Therefore
it
is
unnecessary to disconnect the aiternasor lead when removing the
i
outer half of the primary chaincase.
The 6T
is
also fitted with a different distributor
giving a smaller range of movement, and note of this should be taken when timing the
ignition.
Cylinder Head Bolts. The cylinder head torque stay bolts are fitted in the front
position on all rigid frame machines and in the rear position on all swinging arm
frame machines.
FITTING
A
SIDECAR
SWINGING ARM FRAME MODELS
I
The machine should be prepared in the usual manner by fitting stronger fok springs,
a smaller engine sprocket and stronger springs and hump stops to the Girling
rear suspension units.
!
it
is somewhat difficult to compress the stronger suspension unit springs, and
it
is
suggested that if there
is
a local Girling agent, he should be entrusted with the job.
I
For the guidance of those who do not live within easy reach of
a
Girling agent, the
I
procedure is
as
follows: Depress the top dust cover and remove the spring retainers.
I
The top dust cover, main spring and bottom dust cover may now be lifted
off.
Slide the rubber bump stop down the damper piston rod and
fit
the halves of the
1
bump stop with the point of the cone facing upwards, taking care to tighten the
1
four Allen screws evenly. Smear the new spring with high melting point grease.
i'
fit
to the unit and replace the split spring retainer.
