Emission Information
Enginesthat are certified to meetthe CaliforniaAir
ResourcesBoard (CARB)EmissionStandards must display
information regardingthe Emissions Durability Period and
Air index. The engine manufacturer makes this information
availableto the consumer on emission labels.The engine
emission labelwill indicate certification information.
TheEmissions Durability Perioddescribes the number of
hours of actual running time for which the engine is certified
to be emissions compliant, assuming proper maintenancein
accordancewith the Operating & Maintenance instructions.
Thefollowing categories are used:
Moderate: Engineis certified to be emission compliant for
125 hours of actual engine running time.
Intermediate: Engineis certified to be emission compliant
for 250 hours of actual engine running time.
Extended: Engineis certified to be emission compliant for
500 hours of actual engine running time.
Forexample,a typical walk-behind lawn mower is used 20 to
25 hours peryear. Therefore,the EmissionsDurability
Period of an engine with an intermediate rating would
equateto 10 to 12 years.
Certain engineswill be certified to meet the UnitedStates
Environmental ProtectionAgency (USEPA)Phase2 emission
standards. For phase 2 certified engines,the Emissions
CompliancePeriod referred to on the Emissions Compliance
label indicates the number of operating hours for which the
engine has beenshown to meet Federalemission
requirements.
Forengines less than 225 cc displacement:
CategoryC= 125 hours
CategoryB = 250 hours
CategoryA = 500 hours.
Forengines of 225 cc or more displacement:
CategoryC= 250 hours
CategoryB = 500 hours
CategoryA = 1000 hours.
