regenerating function of the rear bumper sys-
tem is limited.
Malfunction
The warning light shows red. The
swivel-mounted ball head of the
trailer tow hitch is malfunctioning.
Have the system checked as soon as possible.
If this malfunction occurs keep the lug-
gage area closed, as otherwise the trailer
tow hitch with swivel-mounted ball head could
become unlocked inadvertently.<
Swivelling in the ball head
1. Uncouple the trailer or load carrier, remove
the fittings for the track-stabilising devices,
pull out the connector for the trailer's power
supply and, if applicable, pull the adapter
out of the socket.
2. Remove the cover from the side wall of the
luggage area, see Swivelling out the ball
head.
3. Press button briefly, see Swivelling out.
4. Grip the rear of the ball head and swivel it in
until it locks into place audibly. The ball
head is correctly locked into place when the
LED in the button lights up in green.
Grip the rear of the ball head when
you are swivelling it inwards, as other-
wise injury could result.<
Trailer socket
The trailer socket is located on the trailer tow
hitch. Fold the cover downwards.

Nose weight
It is important to ensure that the nose weight is
never less than a minimum of 25 kg or 55 lbs.
The nose weight limit is given on page 160. The
nose weight should be kept close to this limit.
The trailer's nose weight affects the towing
vehicle and thus increases its weight. The
weight of the trailer tow hitch and the nose
weight reduce the maximum payload of your
BMW. Please ensure that these do not cause
the gross weight limit of the towing vehicle to be
exceeded if a trailer is being towed.
Load
When loading the trailer, make sure that the
cargo is stowed as low and as close to the axle
as possible.
A low centre of trailer gravity makes the outfit
much more stable and safe to drive.
Do not exceed the trailer's permitted gross
weight nor the specified permitted towing load
for the vehicle. The respective smaller value is
the limit which should be adhered to.
Tyre pressures
Take great care to check the BMW's and the
trailer's tyre pressures. For the car, the tyre
inflation pressures for heavy loads apply, see
page 119. After each correction of the tyre
pressures, reinitialise the Run Flat Indicator,
