5. After changing the engine oil, and before starting the engine, check the
oil level with the mower on a level surface:
a. Wipe the dipstick clean.
b. Insert and remove the dipstick without screwing it into the filler neck.
Check the oil level shown on the dipstick.
c. If the oil level is low, add oil to reach the upper limit mark on the dip-
stick. Do not overfill. If the engine is overfilled, the excess oil may get
transferred to the air cleaner housing and air cleaner.
Running the engine with a low
oil level can cause engine dam-
age.
d. Screw in the oil filler cap/dipstick
securely.
Engine Oil Recommendations
Oil is a major factor affecting perfor-
mance and service life.
Use 4-stroke motor oil that meets or
exceeds the requirements for API ser-
vice classification SE or later (or equiva-
lent). Always check the API service
label on the oil container to be sure it
includes the letters SE or later (or
equivalent).
SAE 10W-30 is recommended for gen-
eral use. Other viscosities shown in the
chart may be used when the average
temperature in your area is within the
indicated range.
