system to remove and replace a disk drive or solid-state drive with the power

Learn about the steps you must complete before you remove and replace a disk drive or solid-state drive
(SSD) in the system with the system power turned off.
To prepare the system to remove and replace a disk drive or solid-state drive, complete the following
steps:
1. Prepare to remove the disk drive or solid-state drive from the system, drive enclosure, or expansion
unit by using one of the following procedures depending on the operating system that controls the
drive location:
v If the system or logical partition that controls the disk drive or solid-state drive location is running
the AIX operating system, see “Preparing the system to remove a disk drive or solid-state drive in
AIX” on page 113.
v If the system or logical partition that controls the disk drive or solid-state drive location is running
the IBM i operating system, see “Preparing the system to remove a disk drive or solid-state drive
from a system or logical partition controlled by IBM i” on page 113.
v If the system or logical partition that controls the disk drive or solid-state drive location is running
the Linux operating system, see “Preparing the system to remove a disk drive or solid-state drive in
Linux” on page 114.
2. Identify the part and the system that you want to service. The disk drive and SSD slots are in the
front of a system. More SSD slots are also available in an expanded function system.
Figure 38 and Figure 39 on page 40 show the disk drive and solid-state drive locations and service
indicators. Service indicators are located above the latch handle on the disk drives.
