Generalspecication-Biodieselfuels
BiodieselusageinNEWHOLLANDproducts
IntroductiontoFattyAcidMethylEster
(FAME)biodiesel
FAMEbiodiesel,calledbiodieselfuelinthefollowingsec-
tion,consistsofafamilyoffuelsderivedfromvegetable
oilstreatedwithmethylesters.
Therearetwomainbiodieselfueltypes:Rapeseed
MethylEster(RME)andSoybeanMethylEster(SME).
RMEisablendofrapeseedandsunowermethylester,
andisthepreferredcropinEurope.SMEisthepreferred
cropintheUnitedStates.
Biodieselfuelisarenewablealternativefuelsource.Its
useanddevelopmentispromotedworldwide,especially
inEuropeandintheUnitedStates.
NOTICE:Youremissionscontrolsystemiscompatible
withupto5%biodieselfuel(B20).Beawarethattheuse
ofbiodieselfuelthatdoesnotcomplywiththestandards
mentionedinthissectioncouldleadtoseveredamageto
theengine,fuelsystemoraftertreatmentsystemofyour
machine.Theuseofnon-approvedfuelsmayvoidNEW
HOLLANDWarrantycoverage.
Biodieselfuelcanbeusedtorundieselenginesaspure
biodieselfuelorwhenblendedwithstandarddieselfuel:
•
B5:indicatestheblendof5%biodieseland95%diesel
fuels.
•
B7:indicatestheblendof7%biodieseland93%diesel
fuels.
•
B20:indicatestheblendof20%biodieseland80%
dieselfuels.
•
B100:indicatespurebiodiesel,or100%biodieselfuel.
Donotuse.
Biodieselfuelhasseveralpositivefeaturesincomparison
withdieselfuel:
•
Biodieselfueladdslubricitytothefuel,whichisbene-
cialinmanycircumstances,particularlyassulfurand
aromaticsareremovedfromthefuel.
•
Biodieselhasagreatercetanenumberandburns
cleaner.
•
Biodieselproduceslessparticulatematterandreduces
smokeemissions.
•
Biodieselisfullybiodegradableandnon-toxic.
Dieselandbiodieselfuelspecications
Tier4adieselfuelspecicationsarecoveredbythe
following:
•
ASTMD975-10,StandardSpecicationforDieselFuel
Oils.(15ppmsulfurmaximum.)
Biodieselblendsarecoveredby:
•
UnitedStatesDieselFuelSpecicationASTM
D6751-09Aallowsupto5%biodieselsince2009.
UnitedStatesfuelsuppliersareallowedtouseupto
5%biodieselfuel(B5)tosupplythenetwork.
•
UnitedStatesBiodieselFuelSpecicationASTM
D7467-09Aprovidesspecicationsfordieseland
biodieselblendsfromB5toB20.
Purebiodiesel(B100)specicationiscoveredbythe
followingrequirements:
•
ASTMD6751-09A-Standardspecicationforbiodiesel
fuelblendstock(B100)formiddledistillatefuels.
NOTE:ASTMD6751specicationhasbeenupdated
toimprovethequalityofbiodieselinthemarketplace.
Beforerawoilcanbeconvertedintousablebiodiesel
fuel,itmustundergotransestericationtoremoveglyc-
erides.Duringthetransestericationprocess,theoil
reactswithanalcoholtoseparatetheglycerinefrom
thefatorvegetableoil.Thisprocessleavesbehindtwo
products:methylester(thechemicalnameforbiodiesel)
andglycerine(abyproductusuallysoldforuseinsoaps
orotherproducts).
NOTICE:BiodieselfuelsapprovedforuseintheNEW
HOLLANDequipmentmustbetransesteriedandcomply
withtheNorthAmericaStandardASTMD6751.
NOTICE:ColdPressedBiodiesel,ColdPressedOil,
StraightVegetableOil(SVO),ormoregenerallyunre-
nedvegetableoilsusedasmotorfuel,arefuelsthatare
normallymadefromRapeseedoilorsimilarhighoilcon-
tentcrops.Thesekindsoffuelarenottransesteried,so
theydonotfulltheASTMD6751requirements.Thereis
norecognizedqualitystandardavailableforthesetypes
offuel.ThereforetheuseofColdPressedBiodiesel,
ColdPressedOil,StraightVegetableOil(SVO),ormore
generallyunrenedvegetableoilsusedasmotorfuelare
NOTAPPROVEDatanyblendinanyNEWHOLLAND
product.
NOTICE:Anyengineandfuelinjectionequipmenttted
toaNEWHOLLANDvehiclefoundtohaverunwithany
blendofNON-APPROVEDfuel(fuelnotfulllingthespec-
icationdescribedintherequirementASTMD6751)will
nolongerbecoveredforWarrantybyNEWHOLLAND.
Biodieselfuelusageconditions
Youmuststringentlyfollowthebiodieselfuelusagecon-
ditions.Incorrectapplicationofthebiodieselfuelusage
conditionscouldleadtoseveredamagetotheengine,
fuelinjectionequipmentandaftertreatmentsystem.
Themainconcernsrelatedtooperationwithbiodiesel
fuelsare:
•
Filtersandinjectorblockagecausedbypoorfuelqual-
ity.
