EATS (Exhaust Aftertreatment
System)
SCR technology (Selective Catalytic Reduction) is
used to reduce emissions of oxides of nitrogen. A
sensor measures NOx levels in the exhaust.
SCR technology treats the exhaust before it passes
through the catalytic converter by injecting
AdBlue/DEF solution into the exhaust stream.
AdBlue/DEF solution consists of de-ionized water
mixed with 32.5% urea (the solution must fulfill ISO
standard 22241). The urea is decomposed into
ammonia which reacts with NOx to form harmless
nitrogen
and water vapor, which occur naturally in our
environment.
The solution is a transparent, clear liquid with a weak
odor of ammonia. The solution is neither flammable nor
harmful during normal handling. It is however
extremely corrosive toward metals, especially copper
and aluminum.
In order to achieve the most efficient combustion
possible, the engine control unit calculates the
optimum amount of AdBlue/DEF solution that must be
injected in relation to engine load and engine rpm.
SCR system monitoring
If not all of the components in the SCR system are
working as they should, or if the quality of the AdBlue/
DEF solution does not fulfill set standards, maximum
engine torque will be reduced and a fault code stored
in the control unit; for further information refer to
Diagnostic Function and Fault Code Register.
The reduction is activated automatically when
conditions change.
Stopping
Would it remain AdBlue/DEF solution in the hoses
when it freezes, the whole system could be damaged.
To avoid this, and spillages of AdBlube / DEF-solution
the system is equipped with an automatic drainage so
that the hoses, pump and urea injector is emptied and
the AdBlue/DEF solution goes back to the tank when
the engine is turned off.
IMPORTANT!
Automatic drainage only works when the engine is
stopped using the stop button, but not if only the engine
power supply is disconnected.
If the system is not drained properly, AdBlue/DEF
solution may squirt out if the hoses are removed, or it
can form ice spuds in the hoses.
