TheLLDPisnotacongurationprotocoloftheremotesystemorasignalingcontrol
protocolusedbetweentwoports.TheLLDPdiscoverslayer-2protocolconguration
conictsbetweenneighbordevices,butitonlyreportstheproblemtoanupper-layer
networkmanagementdevice,withoutprovidinganymechanismtosolvetheproblem.
TheLLDPissimplyaneighbordiscoveryprotocolthatdenesastandardfornetwork
devices(suchasswitches,routers,andWLANaccesspoints)intheEthernettoadvertise
theiridentitiestoothernodesinthenetworkandstorediscoveryinformationofallneighbor
devices.Forexample,devicecongurationanddeviceIDscanbeadvertisedbytheLLDP .
TheLLDPdenesauniversaladvertisementinformationset,aprotocolforsending
theadvertisementinformation,andamethodforstoringthereceivedadvertisement
information.Thedevicethatwantstoadvertiseitsinformationcanplacemultiplepieces
ofadvertisementinformationintoaLinkLayerDiscoveryProtocolDataUnit(LLDPDU).
TheLLDPDUcontainsavariable-lengthmessageunit(calledTLVs),whicharedescribed
below:
lType:indicatesthetypeofthemessagetobesent.
lLength:indicatesthenumberofbytesinthemessage.
lValue:indicatesthecontentstobesent.
EachLLDPDUcontainsfourmandatoryTLVsandoneoptionalTLV:
lChassisIDTLVandPortIDTLV:identifythesender.
lTLLTLV:notiesthereceiverofthestorageperiodofamessage.Ifthereceiverdoes
notreceiveanyupdatemessagewithinthespeciedperiod,thereceiverdiscardsall
therelatedmessages.ArecommendedupdatefrequencyisdenedbytheIEEE,that
is,tosendmessagesat30-secondintervals.
lOptionalTLVs:includeabasicmanagementTLVset(suchasportdescriptionTLV),a
specialTLVsetdenedbyIEEE802.1,andaspecialTLVsetdenedbyIEEE802.3.
lEndofLLDPDUTLV:indicatestheendofanLLDPDU.
