The alarm system reacts if:
d a door, the engine compartment or
the luggage compartment is
opened.
d the car's attitude changes, for
instance if it is jacked up to remove
a wheel or if it is towed away.
d the power supply from the battery is
interrupted.
It has three ways of indicating that the
car has been tampered with:
d by sounding an alarm for 30 sec-
onds
d by switching on the hazard warn-
ing flashers for five minutes
*.
d by switching the low-beam head-
lights on and off in the same
rhythm as the hazard warning
flashers
*.
On some national-market versions,
the alarm system can only be oper-
ated from the remote control.
If such cars are unlocked manually
with the master key, the alarm will be
triggered off.
Pressing button 1 (unlocking) or start-
ing the engine will switch the alarm
off.
If you have any queries, your BMW
Service station will be glad to advise
you.
Activating and de-activating
Activating and de-activating take
place when the door key is turned or
the remote control operated.
Activation is confirmed by the hazard
warning flashers lighting up unce only.
Alarm system telltale
d If the LED on the centre console
flashes repeatedly: the system is
activated.
d If the LED flashes during the activat-
ing routine: not all doors, engine or
luggage compartment or glove box
are correctly closed, or a side win-
dow is open by more than a small
amount (app. 10mm). But even if the
item concerned is not closed cor-
rectly, the remaining items are pro-
tected and the LED will flash
continuously after 10 seconds.
d If the LED goes out when the sys-
tem is de-activated: no attempt was
made to enter the car during your
absence.
