STARTING SYSTEM
Tbt starling system has only
one
function to
perform-to
crank
the engine.
In
the
starting
syste.m
there
are
four basic
unit.!:
the
baucry,
the
starting
solenoid,
the
slarting
relay,
and
the
starting
motor
.
The
battery
supplies
the
energy,
the
solenoid completes the circuit, allowing this energy to
flow
to the
starting
motor
and
the
relay
is
used with
the
Jenoid
to
reduce
the volLage
drop
during
the
slarting
operation.
The
motor
which
draws
a
large
amount
of
Cur-
rent
rOT a
short
period
of
time,
then
delivers
mechanical
oergy
and
does
the
actual
work of
cranking
the engine.

motor
is
designed
to
incorporate
a solenoid drive
echanism
which
assures positive
engagement
of
lhe
start-
ng
motor
pinion
with
lhe
flywheel until the
engine
is
SlaTted.
The
solenoid
is
controlled
by
the
key
starter
switch

battery
circuit
. A
shielded
neutral
safety switch
is
rovided to
prevent
slarting
of
the
engine
with
the
trans-
mission
selector
lever
in
other
than
up"
or
UN"
position.

headlight

in
which
the
light sou1te

reflector, lens
and
gasket
arc
all assembled in a securely sealed
unit
.
This
sealed
con-
struction
prevents tarnished reflectors
and
keeps
dirt
and
moisture from
the
reflector
and
inside
of
lens, assuring
maximum
Hghting efficiency
throughout
the
life
of
the
unit.
The
"Sealed
Beam"
units
have
two
separate
filaments
located
in
the
unit
in position
to
produce
an
upper
(coun-
try) light
beam
and
a lower (traffic) light
beam
.
The
upper
beam
is
designed to iJluminate
the
road
evenJy for
con-
siderable
distance
ahead
of
the
vehicle
and
should
only
be
used
on
the
open
highway
when
no
other
vehicles
are
approaching
.
The
lower
beam
is
adjusted to
illuminate
the
right
side
of
the
road
a reasonable distance
ahead
but
to
prevent
glare
in
the
eyes
of
the
oncoming
driven
.

upper
beams
are

opening

speedometer
dial.
The
dimmer
swiech
is
used to
switch from
one
beam
to
the other. A wire
protector
screen,
rim
and
housing as-
sembly
(fig. 74), which
is
hinged
at
the
top
and
se-
cured
wi
th a single screw
at
the
bottom,
is
provided
